Keeping dairy busy

Meier balances
hauling milk,
breeding,
milking, cows
By MISSY MUSSMAN
Staff Writer

RICHMOND Milking cows,

breeding cows and hauling milk all
have two things in common. They are
all jobs in the dairy industry, and they
are all jobs that Kirsten Meier, 24, has.
I keep busy thats for sure, Meier
said. Im definitely sticking with the
dairy route.
Meier does relief milk hauling,
works part-time for Select Sires as an
A.I. technician and milks 62 cows fulltime at Vernon and Joann Mehrs dairy
farm near Richmond.
Theres always something for me
to do, Meier said. I like the variety of
work.

Talk about the

weather

As a farmer it used to annoy me

when it rained just enough to make the
sidewalk wet and non-farmers considered it a great rain. Or when they would
complain about not
having enough rain because their grass was
getting dry. But then
if it rained it might
ruin their weekend.
Peoples livelihoods
were on the line, but
since they didnt walk
in those shoes, I guess by Diane
the disconnect was un- Leukam
derstandable.
You often hear the weather forecasters reassuring their viewers that
they will have a nice dry weekend
so as not to ruin their camping trips or
picnics, and for the most part they are
getting quite accurate. The old-timers
didnt have the benefit of those forecasts, which would likely have been
used to determine when to cut hay. I
recently had the pleasure of spending
time with an elderly woman who was
raised on a farm. I asked her how her
dad would decide when he should cut
hay. According to her, he would just
say, Yeah I think well go and cut some
hay down today. Simple enough.
In the absence of the technology
we have now, people used to use folklore and nature to predict the weather.
Youve probably heard a few of these
sayings. It will rain or storm if: a dog
or cat eats grass; theres no dew on the
grass in the morning; the flies are biting; your bones are aching; or the wind
is from the east.
Ive experienced all of the above
and believe them to be true. However,
the one predictor that always alerted
me was when the kids and the cows
started acting up. When that barometer started going south, so did their
behavior. I think that goes to show
how much were truly affected by the
weather, since neither kids nor cows
are watching the forecast to clue them
in on whats ahead so they can fake a
response.
If youve been around long
enough, youve no doubt drawn your
own conclusions on various aspects of
the weather. Hot, cold, sunny, cloudy,
wet or dry, one thing is for sure well
always have something to talk about!

Rain, rain go away

Come again another day.
Rain, rain go away
Little Johnny wants to play.
While this little jingle might replay over and over in my head, its not
often I would wholeheartedly join in
the It can quit now chorus.
Even in a wet year, when there is
more than enough moisture, I hesitate
to damn the rain because it can shut
off just as quickly as it started. With
so many differing opinions on what
the weather should be, Ive always
thought its a good thing we cant control it, because wed be in a constant
state of chaos.
But can we control the weather?
Just a couple hours up the freeway
in Fargo, N.D., is Weather Modification, Inc., the worlds largest company whose business it is to change the
weather. They do everything from
cloud seeding or rain enhancement
to hail suppression and fog dispersal.
Theyve worked on weather projects
in the United States and at least 18 other countries around the world.
There are many such companies in
operation today in what is apparently a
booming business. Much of the western United States uses these services
for rain enhancement.
Ever the skeptic, I wonder about
the long-term effects of messing
around with the weather. Theres even
a theory out there that artificial weather changers, along with the steam from
aircraft, are creating global warming.
Seriously? Like we didnt have
enough to worry about. After reading
up on this even a little, I can honestly say I didnt know how prevalent
weather modification was. They say
what you dont know cant hurt you,
so when it comes to this topic I should
be fine. Ill let the experts argue their
theories.
We received a beautiful rain Sunday night, and Im always so grateful
when that happens. You can water
or irrigate all you want, but theres
nothing like a nice summer rain to
breathe new life into everything, even
if it wasnt dry before. I love the musty
compost smell of the earth when those
first drops begin to fall, and then I just
hope it keeps raining until everything
gets a good soaking.

installed two robotic milking systems.
At first we didnt know if we
should host the breakfast, Janski said.
Then we realized its a great opportunity to see what a dairy farm looks like
and how it operates for many people
who dont know.
Throughout the morning, an estimated 3,000 visitors from across
Stearns County attended the event,
nearly 2,400 of which also enjoyed a
hot breakfast provided by the Kimball

Unfortunately it did rain, which
we think deterred attendance a bit,
said Tara Meyer, Stearns County

a family tradition, for the camaraderie

birthday wish.
Ive never been on a farm before,
Billig said. Every year Ive wanted to
have a birthday party on the farm, but
its never worked out. Its exciting and
the breakfast was a great way to start.
Billig participated in the farm tours
with her friends, Nadia and Kyra, parents, Naomi Goering and Kent Billig,
and her grandmother, Jackie Goering.
I am just amazed. Today has been
a very good experience, the grandmother said. Farming is such an awesome job.

The immaculate view of the farm

did not come without hours of dedication from countless volunteers 20

scenes.
With animal pens bedded days
leading up to the event, the Janski family reorganized the day-to-day chores
so that all would be completed by the
time the breakfast started.
This way they were done and out
of our way, said Janski, whose family
began chores at 1 oclock that Saturday
morning.

buildings.
We did that until people showed up, which came quickly, Janski said.
Fortunately, the effort in preparing for the breakfast was duly noted.
Many times the public isnt aware of the hard work farmers do to produce
nutritious food, said Brad Wenz, who was attending with his wife and granddaughter. Its hard work and a great investment, and we as consumers need to
recognize that and become more informed of where our food comes from.
Each year, the Stearns County Breakfast on the Farm aims to expose the lifestyle of dairy farming to community members across the county. This year, Janski
felt they accomplished that goal.
Our main interest was to educate those who are removed from agriculture,
he said.
Tour guides and industry professionals provided information about the dayto-day life on the farm and how a wholesome product is produced.
Theres nothing more valuable than a hands-on experience teaching people
about their food, Meyer said.
The 2017 breakfast will be held at Kuechle Dairy in Watkins on the first Saturday of June.

MEIER continued from front

near Jacobs Prairie for seven years,
Meier wanted to stay in the dairy industry.
Ive been involved in it my whole
life, Meier said. I always wanted a
career in dairy. I had to have cows involved.
Meier applied for a full-time position with Select Sires as an A.I. technician and began working for them in of
February 2015.
It was another way for me to be
around cows, Meier said.
Ironically, one of the farms she
served as an A.I. technician for happened to be Vernon and Joann Mehr.
Thats how I found out about
them, Meier said. I still do the breeding for them.
During one of her visits to the
Mehr farm, Meier offered to help them
with chores after they expressed the
need for more help on their farm.
I told them that I had some spare
time after I got done with my job with
Select Sires and would love to help,
Meier said.
By June 2015, Meier was working part-time on the Mehr farm while
working full-time with Select Sires.
However, early this past December, Meier scaled back to part-time
with Select Sires and went full-time on
the Mehr farm.
Ive always enjoyed milking
cows. Its what I want to do, Meier
said. The Mehrs have given me that
opportunity and Im very grateful to
them. Theyre like a second family to
me.
On top of the two jobs with the
Mehrs and Select Sires, Meier has also
been doing relief milk hauling for the
past two years, and has already helped
four times this year.
My friend, Amanda (Bertram)
Thesing, started me on that, Meier
said. I got my commercial drivers

Just because Im a girl doesnt mean
that I cant do it.
With three different jobs, Meier
has mastered her routine.
At the Mehrs dairy farm, Meier
arrives in the morning at 4:50 to feed
the calves.
I feed calves like my mom and

Meier does have to find a replacement from time to time.

She also works one weekend each month for Select

I dont have to find a
replacement though, Meier said. I can get morning
chores done, go out and breed
cows, and be back for evening
chores. It works well.
Although she has only
done the relief milk hauling
four times this year, she does
miss morning chores on the
days she hauls since she has
to leave for Belgrade by 4:30
a.m. to start her nearly 250mile round trip traveling to

Balancing all three of
these jobs has become an art
for Meier.
It can be stressful at
times, but I make time for everything and have been able
to keep up with all three of
them, Meier said.
It has also allowed her to

see a broader view of the industry.

I love being able to see
different dairy operations and
what works for them, Meier
said. The farmers I have met
along the way with both Select
Sires and hauling milk have
been great.
Looking ahead, Meier
hopes to eventually focus on
milking cows.

I really want to farm.

There is opportunity there,
Meier said. Im going to see
how the next few years go to
find out where I will be.
But in the meantime, she
is enjoying balancing her three
jobs in the dairy industry.
I absolutely love what
Im doing, Meier said. All

A home built for a lifetime

Tvrdiks embrace
Aging in Place
concept
By JENNIFER COYNE
Staff Writer

ALEXANDRIA With an
unsteady balance and poorer eyesight,
among other signs of aging, many
individuals rely on assisted living or
nursing homes to maintain a satisfying
lifestyle.
With the creative assistance of
Richard Hardine, Norm and Sue
Tvrdik have found an alternative to the
common solutions of aging.
In January, the Alexandria couple
moved into their all-accessible home
near Turtle Lake on the property that
Sues great-grandparents homesteaded.
We saw both of our parents
struggle to move around their
farmhouses and we knew we needed
something different, Sue said. We
wanted to enjoy what we have as long
as we can.
The Tvrdiks are a part of a growing
movement called Aging in Place,
where individuals prepare to live the
remainder of their lives at the residence
they feel most familiar in home by
incorporating features that will become
beneficial as health and mobility fades.
Were a part of a society where
children leave the nest and family is
spread out, but this is where the parents
grew up and have lived for a lifetime,
said Hardine, who suffers from post
polio syndrome (PPS) and kick-started

Norm and Sue Tvrdik embrace the idea of Aging in Place. The couple built a home near Alexandria that accommodates their
needs today and will meet their needs in the future as they become older.

current and future needs using a

universal design.
Its usable by everyone in every
way, shape and form, Hardine said.
Anyone can live in these homes
without noticing its adaptations for the
elderly or handicapped.
Prior to their current living
situation, the Tvrdiks farmed in
Douglas County on Norms familys
farmstead. After undergoing back
surgery several years ago, Norm found
it difficult to move around the home;
Sue had a similar experience after
breaking her foot.
We were living in a 1917
farmhouse, where to use the bathroom
you either had to go upstairs or
downstairs, and bedrooms were
upstairs, Sue said. After having
surgery, Norm was stuck in one spot.
As the couple slowly moved
towards retirement, they envisioned a
home that would accommodate their
needs on down the road.
That was really a long process,
but something we didnt want to decide
on overnight, said Sue, who began

constructing a building plan with her

husband in 1999. We looked a long
time to find the perfect house plan.
Tucked along the lakeside within
a grove of trees, the Tvrdiks home
features an entryway without stairs and
a two-car garage, which incorporates
enough space for a wheelchair or
walker to weave between the vehicles
and enter the home.
With an open floor plan, the home
is designed to assist the elderly and
disabled, although to those unaware
of the true purpose, the home simply
seems spacious for large social
gatherings.
We didnt want the home to look
institutional, Norm said. We wanted
it to be like everyone elses, but more
user friendly.
Hardine added, No two homes are
alike. Theyre all designed in order to
stay accessible to those living in it.
Although a staircase going towards
the basement welcomes guests into
the home, all activities of daily living
(ADL) the kitchen, bathrooms,
bedrooms and laundry room are on

Wild parsnip a growing problem

By HERMAN LENSING
Staff Writer

GETTY TOWNSHIP From a

distance a stand of wild parsnip might
offer a nice scenic yellow in a background of green grass.
That is deceptive. The plant poses
long-term challenges to native plant
and animal life as it take over areas.
A member of the parsnip family, wild
parsnip has been listed as a noxious
weed by the Minnesota Department
of Agriculture. In recent years its increased spreading and harmful characteristics have made it a focus of
eradication efforts in Stearns and other
counties.
It is a two-year plant, said Bob
Dunning, Stearns County Agricultural Inspector. In the first year it is in
rosette stage. It does not flower, but it
builds up its root. In the second year
it produces flower, set seeds and then
dies. But it has created hundreds of
seeds per plant.
The seeds can lie dormant for up to
four years before germinating. While
most fall and germinate near the plant,
others are carried away.
The wind might carry them or
wildlife or water (from rainfall) can
disperse them, said Dunning. The
germination percentage has to be enormous. It is one of first plants to green
up in the spring and one of the last to
grow brown in the fall.
Even people help spread the plant.
Seeds can fall onto clothing, tools or
become stuck on shoes, only to fall off
at a different location.
The weed is usually found in open

habitats, fence rows, prairie restoration, poorly-managed pastures and

along roadsides. During much of July
it has dominant yellow flowers.
The root of the plant resembles a
carrot. However, Dunning does not encourage anyone to eat it. Actually any-

one dealing with the plant should take

precautions, such as wearing gloves,
and covering arms and legs. The plant,
similar to burn weeds and poison ivy,
has a sap that causes reddening or
blisters and can be painful.
It (the sap) causes phyto-pho-

to-dermatitis, said Dunning. If the

sap gets on the skin and is exposed to
ultraviolet light, it will blister.

A deep-green center with big leaves highlight the montana Aureomarginata, one of
Elizabeth Tomsches larger hosta plants at her home near St. Joseph.

By HERMAN LENSING
Staff Writer
ST. JOSEPH The hosta plant is
perfect for outdoor displays.
They are a decorative plant and
a good outdoor plant, said Elizabeth
Tomsche of Woodland Hostas, located
near St. Johns University. I started dividing hostas in 2010 and started selling them in 2011.
Tomsches interest in hostas came
at the encouragement of her father,
Dave Reisinger, who grew up on the
land Elisabeth Tomsche and her husband, Pete, now own. Her dad grew
hostas here for years.
This is my grandparents place,

where my dad grew up. There were

some hostas here. He was always after
me to grow and sell hostas, and I finally listened to him and got into it, said
Tomsche.
The business has flourished to
where Tomsche is growing over 200
varieties, in all sizes, shapes and colors.
Some people breed hostas, but I
dont do that, she said. In the spring
I will order plants from someone who
divides hostas from a bigger plant.
Dividing a hosta is one way to start
a new plant of the same species. Dividing is done by digging up a plant and
cutting off part of the root system for
transplanting.

I also buy tissue cultured
hostas. They are hosta tissue
cut from a plant and grown in
a test tube into a one inch plug.
I buy the hosta plug plants and
grow them two or three years,
until they are a sellable size,
she said.
Another method is to remove and transplant eyes of
the plants, found at the base of
the leaves.
You can plant hostas
anytime the ground is workable, said Tomsche. Most
plant them in the spring. If you
are going to divide a plant,
I would not plant it after late
September.
One reason for using hostas as decorative plants is they
do well near trees. While they
can grow well in some sunshine, constant exposure to
the sun, particularly afternoon
sun, will stunt the growth of
the plant.
Sheltered or filtered sunshine is the best, said Tomsche. There are some varieties
that can take sun, but usually
they do better in shade.
Fragrant hostas, however,
need more sunshine. It is recommended they have about

hostas do better in sun than
other varieties.
The plants also like water.
It is recommended that they
receive about five gallons of
water weekly unless there is
about one inch of rain. Just
how much water depends on
the size of the plant.
There is a wide range of
sizes.
On some of my plants

Hosta information and trivia

Hostas are native to northeast Asia (China,
Japan, Korea and parts of far eastern Russia.
They are called hostas in honor of Austrian
botanist Nicholas Thomas Host.
In Japan it is called giboshi.
It is beloved there are at least 7,000 varieties of
hostas.
Some call hostas grown in Japan hosuta, to
distinguish them from the varieties grown in
the western world.
In the wild, hostas are usually green.
The August Lily is the most fragrant of hostas.
Hostas can very in size from being less than
four inches to over six feet across.
While primarily a decorative plant, all species
of hostas are edible, and some or grown as
vegetables some Asian cultures.
The plant is toxic to dogs, cats and horses.
Among the interesting names of some varieties
are: Alakazaam, Captain Kirk, Hide Out,
Moonstruck and Pineapple Upside Down

inch, said Tomsche. Another

plant will grow to have leaves
about two feet across and be
about four-feet high.
That plant, called the Empress Wu, takes five to seven
years to get that big. Tomsches plant is not yet that old.
Each of her 200 varieties
has a different name, and Tomsche knows what all of them
look like.
The Cameo is a small variety with heart-shaped leaves
and turns cream-colored on
the edges, she said. I really
like that one.
The Hacksaw variety
looks like a cactus; the Josephine has a fern-like appearance; the Apple Tiny has small
leaves; the Leaping Lizard has
a curly leaf, which is green and
puckered; the Sharp Dressed
Man is medium sized and
green but has center veins likened to exploding fireworks.
I think the blue leaves are
my favorite, she said. I like
the June hosta.
June hostas are medium-sized with a yellow-blue
and green-colored leaf. It is a
common variety in the area.
The plants do well over
the winter, but the smaller
ones should be well covered.
To help with keeping them
watered and to help with weed
control, Tomsche has placed
mulch around them manure,
pine needles, wood shavings
and mushroom straw. The pine
needles also help deter one of

the hosta predators.

Slugs like hostas, she
said. They eat the leaves. The
pine needles have sharp edges and they (slugs) dont like
that.
The only other animals
shes ever had a problem with
were deer. They also like the
plants for eating.
Two years ago they (deer)
cleared out one of the display
beds. It took until fall before
they came back, she said.
Insects she likes to see
around the plants are bees.
They appear when flowers
start growing on the hostas.
Hostas arent really
known for their flowers, but
they do have flowers, she
said. They range from a white
flower to a dark purple flower.
Most are lavender. When the

flowers come, we have quite a

few bees.
Woodland Hostas is open
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and from 1 to
5 p.m. on Sundays. It is closed
Mondays.
The price of the hostas
varies, depending upon the variety. Tomsche not only grows
and sells hostas in pots, but
their yard is a showcase for
varieties that are sold. She also
likes to grow new varieties.
Im trying to grow a
White Feather plant now, she
said. Some say it takes five to
seven years.
Tomsche is glad she took
the advice of her father to
grow hostas. Its led to the
hosta haven she enjoys today
and passes on to her hosta customers.

Wild parsnip is now found in other
parts of the country and state. A native
of Europe and Asia, it thrived in the
Americas because there are no natural
controls. As a noxious weed, property,
owners are required to suppress the
spread and to eliminate the weed if
possible.
It is listed on the control category, said Dunning. That means if it is
on your property efforts must be made
to control it from propagating or producing seed.
Dunning works with township and
city officials to make them aware of the
problem. Those officials are responsible for letting property owners know a
problem exists.
If they have questions in Stearns
County they can come to me, said
Dunning. If people ignore all the notices, the county will hire someone to
do the work and that cost is assessed to
the property owner.
The county does have a grant to
help property owners with the eradication. Called the Cooperative Weed
Management Area (CWMA) and run
through the Soil and Water Conservation District, the grant will pay for 75
percent of up to a total $900 spent on
controlling the weed.
That grant will pay 75 percent of
treatment cost with chemicals or if you
want to do it yourself, up to 75 percent
of whatever chemical you buy to put

on the plant, said Dunning

Using chemical is effective, but
Dunning, but he urges people to contact him or the SWCD before taking
any action.
We recommend selective herbicide application, that leaves grass intact to fill the area, said Dunning.
There are other ways to control
and reduce the weed.
They can be removed by cutting
off the plant at the root. The cut must
be at least one inch, preferably two
inches, below the surface or the plant
will grow back.
Some wait until the plant has died,
but not yet dropped seeds. They then
collect the head of the plant and burn it.
Eliminating the seeds means there
are substantially less plants the next
year, said Dunning.
One of the first steps to controlling
the weed is to be aware that it is on
property. Because of its flower color
and size it is often mistaken for other
plants.
I had a number people tell me they
think it is wild dill, said Dunning.
Because the weed is now coming
into the prime flowering time (when
the plant blooms turn yellow), it is easier to see where it might be.
In Stearns County those wanting
more information, or help with identifying, controlling or reducing the weed
can contact Dunning at 320-656-6578
or the SWCD at 320-251-7800, Ext. 3.

A touch of country
Floerkes build home using farm elements
By DIANE LEUKAM
Staff Writer

ROUND PRAIRIE When

Janna and Bob Floerke sit in
the porch of their home west
of Round Prairie, it seems like
theyve been there forever.
There is the farm where Janna
grew up, the place they visited
for the 38 years they lived in Inver Grove Heights and now, the
place they call home.
Having bought the 140acre property from her mother
11 years ago, the Floerkes have
worked on every building on
the property.
Everything you see here
has always been here, Janna
said.
Everything, that is, except
the home they started building
last summer and are now finishing the process of moving into.
Now were just waiting
for the grass to grow, Bob said.
Having finally gotten the
opportunity to move back to the
country has been a long-awaited dream. And for them, having
lived in the Cities for so long,
it was important that the home
they built be all country.
Ironically, their favorite
part of the home, the porch, was
not even in the plans but developed later. Originally, it was
to be an open, outdoor space

covered with a roof. Now its

a weather-proof, screened-in
space they can enjoy all year.
And it is country, from floor to
ceiling. The floor is stamped
concrete with the look of wood
planking. The lower walls are
cement board and the upper
walls, bead board. But perhaps
the most country feature in

the porch is the metal ceiling

made from grain bin steel.
When the idea came up, I
thought it was a little weird, but
it grew on me, said Janna.
Now its one of their favorite features. Another is the thin,
flexible windows that move up
and down, with sections that
slide together, creating an open,

purchased the land in 1941, Janna helped her parents on

the farm from a young age.
I just loved everything about the farm, said Janna.
After her dad passed away 30 years ago, her mother stayed on the farm.
When people tried to convince Marge to move into
town, she said, I can look out the window and see a
baby fawn almost any morning [in the spring]. Why
would I move to town?
She finally did move to town six years ago.
Now, Bob and Janna keep up their own place in
the country. With the house finished, there will be more
time to fish on area lakes. Janna, who loves to cook and
work in the garden, will have plenty to do.
She loves her garden. Shell miss out on other

Bob.
And Bob will keep busy tinkering in his shop, fixing things and maybe restoring a tractor or two.

vorite memory of that time illustrates the peace and

serenity that surrounds them. One day while they were
sitting outside having lunch with the crew that built the
home, they thought they heard a train. They dismissed
it, thinking there were none around. The next day they
heard the same sound at the same time. It turns out it
was a train by Alexandria, some 25 miles away.
The quiet is just one thing the Floerkes enjoy, but
there are other reasons they finally purchased the land.
I didnt want to lose my deer hunting spot, said
Janna, pointing out the window to her deer stand sitting
at the edge of a clearing maybe 500 yards from their
home.
Weve been deer hunting here since we were married in 1976, she said.
These days she has a new deer stand with windows
and a heater, a request she made when the cold started
getting to her.
I threatened to quit so Bob built me a new one,
Janna said.
The new stand comes in handy as Jana takes their
young granddaughter out hunting with her. The Floerkes have one son, two daughters, and three grandchildren all who live near each other in the Twin Cities
area.
Being able to see 500 yards out their windows is
something that wouldnt have been possible a few years
ago. An aerial photo of the farm shows several groves
of trees near where the house now stands.
This was solid woods, Bob said. Four or five
years ago a storm came through and took down all the
good trees. The only ones left were horrible.
I miss the woods, said Janna, who remembers
them from childhood on.

are different types of vaccines to protect your dog
against this disease. None of them are 100 percent
effective but they do offer another layer of protection for your pet. Ask your veterinarian if one of
these is appropriate for your dog. Finally, you can
use insecticides on your pet in the form of topical
drops such as Frontline, collars such as the Preventic or Seresto collar, or newer oral medications such as Bravecto and Nexgard. Bravecto is
a flavored oral tablet that provides three months
of protection against fleas and ticks with one dose.
Be careful combining products check with your

with which the cat comes in contact. The DEET
found in many human products is not safe for pets
and sprays meant for clothing are not safe for pets.
With those preventative steps in mind, I wish you

With warmer temperatures upon us, so are the

ticks. We have the unlucky privilege of being and
endemic area for ticks that carry the spirochete organism, Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme
disease in people and animals. This organism
cannot live outside of its host or
a tick. The tick that carries it in
our area is the Deer tick, Ixodes
scapularis. This tick has a two
year life cycle with three different hosts. It starts as an egg in the
spring one of 2-3,000 laid by
a single female. It hatches into a
very tiny larva that typically at- by Wendy
taches and feeds off of a mouse Womack, DVM
or other small rodent or bird. The
following spring it molts into a nymph that then
attaches to and feeds off of something larger like
a dog, cat, or you or me. By the late summer it
molts into an adult and attaches to and feeds off of
a deer (or pet or person living in deer territory) and
mates. The females then settle into the leaf litter
for the winter, ready to lay eggs again the following spring. Any of these hosts along the way that
have the Lyme organism in their blood can infect
the tick allowing it to pass it along to the next host
from which it takes a blood meal. Thus there are
two waves in the tick season, nymphs feeding in
the spring and adults feeding in the fall.
Lyme disease manifests itself differently in
dogs and people. After an infected tick bite in
people, flu-like symptoms and possibly a bullseye
rash appear within days to weeks. As the disease
progresses, joint pain, neurologic abnormalities
and cardiac arrhythmias can develop. Up to 80
percent of people bitten by an infected tick will
develop the rash and flu-like symptoms with the
other complications being less common. In dogs it
takes much longer for symptoms to start weeks
to months. Dogs do not get the classic bullseye
rash. The most common symptoms are loss of
appetite, lethargy, fever and stiffness. Only 5-10
percent of dogs with antibodies in their blood due
to exposure to an infected tick will ever get sick.
A possible long-term complication for dogs with
the Lyme organism in their body is kidney damage
which can be fatal.
There is a quick and easy blood test that can
screen your dog for exposure to this organism at
your veterinarians office. Because it is screening
for antibodies produced against the organism, there
is a time delay after the bite, while the dogs immune system creates these antibodies, before the
test will be accurate this takes anywhere from
three to five weeks. This means that testing im-

bought my parents out Nov. 1. Mom (Barb) works off the farm, Dad (Kerry) continues to operate the chicken barn (layer hens) and run the crops. I
also finish out my steers and raise my replacements. We work together as
necessary.
What is the biggest challenge youve encountered mixing farming and
baseball? The time commitment it takes to do both well. You get out of
it what you put into it. That also holds true for a life on the farm and as a
local amateur ball player. The time commitment I couldnt give to baseball
was the majority of the reason I wasnt involved for the last three years
while I began on the farm.
What is your game day routine? I dont have one yet. I start early and end
late. Thanks to my family, and even a few teammates, they help make it
possible. Everyone is involved with Farming baseball: my summer helpers
and cousins Wyatt and Kirby, have Legion ball on Tuesday and Thursday
nights. Mom and Dad have come out of dairy retirement to lend a hand
when needed, while also attending every game and club event. My siblings: Brad, Chad (teammates) and Shannon (fan), are always helpful for
field work or in the barn.
Tell us your favorite or most unique experience as a ball player. A couple come to mind, atop many great times. Back in 2012, in a home game
against Richmond, which was also a big game leading into playoffs and
our Hall of Fame Game, we had 600-plus fans. I played in left field and
had about 20 of my own fans behind the fence. That was a big overflow
crowd and theres nothing better than Stearns County League fans. They
love watching their baseball as much as we love playing it.
The other is a growing lifelong rivalry with my cousins in St. Martin.
The stakes are always higher in a rivalry game, no matter how good or bad
the season is going. This year, the bat boys, Jaydon and Devon, owed my
family a pizza in our hometown bar after we beat St. Martin that day. I want
to up the ante. If we beat them again on July 15: they have to help me a day
on the farm driving tractors and wearing Farming Flames gear.
What baseball team do you play on?
Spring Hill Chargers
How long have you been playing amateur baseball? 13 years
What position do you play? Third
base
Tell us about your farm. I have a 610by 60-foot chicken barn. When I have
time, I help on my dads 60-cow dairy
farm.
What is the biggest challenge youve
encountered mixing farming and
baseball? The biggest challenge I have
Eric Schoenberg
encountered thus far, is when load out
Spring Hill
date is the same day as a game.
What is your game day routine? My
game day routine isnt always the same but usually I wake up to get ready
for chores. After chores, I go to my parents house for breakfast and an
hour or so of relaxing before heading to the diamond for some batting
practice before the game.
Tell us your favorite or most unique experience as a ball player. My
favorite and kind of unique experience as a ball player is when my
brothers, Shawn, Corey and I all hit a in the same game. This was before
my brother, Austin, was playing. Again this year, my brothers Shawn and
Austin, and I all hit a homerun in the same game. Its not to often you can
have three siblings playing together and all hit a homerun in the same
game.

I have is doing my chores in the morning, going
to church, hurry up and eat dinner, and then go to
one of my older brothers baseball games. I have
one sister, Mindy, who is the oldest and played
softball, and three older brothers who all play
baseball. My oldest brother, Luke, plays for the
Nisswa Lightning. My other brothers, Paul and
John, play for the Sartell Muskies. Im the youngest in the family. It isnt very hard to find a ballgame to go to on most days. But it all started with
my dad, Jim, who used to play for the St. Stephen
Steves when he was young and before he started
milking cows. His passion for the game got all of
my brothers and me playing little league, school
ball, and now amateur baseball. We love every
inning of it.

I always knew my mom (Marge Anderson) was an amazing cook. She
shared many recipes with me and lots of other people. Most of her
recipes had stories behind them. When my dad (Floyd Anderson) was
young, his mother would send the children out to pick wild raspberries. One of his favorites was Raspberry Whip. Absolutely delicious
over angel food cake. He always got this for his birthday.
