RULES AROUND US

LESSON 1.
KINDS RULES?

WHAT

Our lives are molded by rules. Wherever we live, whether at home,

neighbourhood, or school. What are rules actually? A rule tells us what to
do and what not to do. Creating and following rules let us understand
what

is

expected

from

us

and

that

inappropriate

conduct

has

consequences. Rules are also guidelines for actions and for the evaluation
of actions in terms of good and bad, or right and wrong, and therefore a
part of moral or values education in school.
Well, there are two different kinds of rules, namely the written rule and
the unwritten rule.
The written rule means rule or regulation that people have written and
agreed together. These are rules that are presented to us in plain sight.
The unwritten rule means the rule or regulation that is not written but
people have agreed and must obey it. The unwritten rules have actually
been taught by parents or society at large, most of which establish criteria
for considerate behavior that is appropriate in given situations. The
unwritten rules may also be called as the hidden rules/ unspoken rules.
What written rules and unwritten rules do you follow at your home, your
school, and your neighbourhood? Can you think about it?

LESSON 2. EXPLAINING THE BENEFIT OF

RULES IN OUR LIVES
Rules at our community
When we are in our community, we need rules to bind us as a member of
society.

We

become

productive

members

of

society because of how we

are

raised

and

taught

to

follow rules. A society without

an

agreed-upon

code

of

conduct would be like football without rules or a referee.

A prosperous society is possible only when each individual is, by rule of

law, protected from force imposed by others. Rules such as "we own it"
prevent people from forcing their fantasy
onto others. When "we own it," each
individual is responsible for his share of
"ownership."

Rules at our school

When are at school, we need rules too.
Every school has its own rules. We usually call it as regulation or dicipline.
Every students should be aware of the school rules and obey it. What are
school rules actually? School rules are the standards of behaviour the
school expects of its students. Why do we
need to have school rules?

School rules

tell students and parents

what the school considers important

Set

out

students

rights

and

responsibilities

Promote a supportive environment at

the school, such as an effective teaching and learning environment,

mutual respect among school members

Encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour

and the consequences of their actions

Help us increase our achievements. If we live in discipline and keep

everything in order everyday, we will be able to increase our
achievements at school.

Help us make school a safe place where everyone can learn.

LESSON 3. EXPLAINING THE CONSEQUENCES OF VIOLATING THE SCHOOL

RULES
What are the consequences of violating the school rules? Usually, teachers or
principal will give a warning to any student who breaks the rules. Nevertheless,
the teacher or the principal will give the student more than just a warning but
also suspension if s/he is still breaking the school rules. The punishment given
does not mean that the teacher hates the students but to help the student
practicing discipline. By giving the punishment, the teacher expects the students
to fix his/her behaviour by not repeating the violating action in the future.

To get clearer picture, let us read the story about Aryanis family below.
