MyhopeisthatwecanlearnhowtobetterutilizeourtimeinteractingwiththeScripturestoaffect
transformationinourselvesandinthoseweteach.Andsohowdowedothat?
Idontintendtotellyouthatthereisonlyonewaythatthishappens.ButIwillsaythatIbelievethereare
foundationalwaysthatthishappensandthentherearesortofadditionalwaysthatthishappens.Somyhope
isalwaysthatwewillbeabletodistinguishbetweenthatwhichisfoundationalandthenthatwhichisnotso
thatwecanmakesurethatweareapproachingourtimeintheWordinawaythatmakessense.
Manyofushavethoughtforyearsthatbecausewevehonoredthepracticeofsittingdowntohaveaquiet
timeoratimewiththeLordthatwearegrowinginliteracy.Butifmyinboxisanyindication,ifthearticle
thatIreadyouearlieriscarryinganytruth,andifthestoriesthatIhearfromwomenrepeatedlyareaccurate,
itcouldverywellbethatyoucouldhavespentthelastthirtyyearsinchurchandstillfindyourselfcarrying
aroundalmostadirtylittlesecretofwhereyoualwaysfeellike,Ishouldknowitbetter.
NowImgoingtotellyou,ImgoingtofeeluntilthedayIdiethatIshouldknowitbetter.Butitistruethat
overthecourseofourlifetimeweshouldbegrowinginourabilitytohandlethis.Andwomencomeupto
mesoapologeticallyallthetimeandsay,Ivebeeninachurchmywholelife.Noonehastoldmehowto
dothis.
IdonteverwanttoassumethatpeoplehaveafoundationalunderstandingoftheScriptureorofhowtogeta
foundationalunderstandingoftheScripture.Andifyouintendtoteachwomen,Idontwantyoutoassume
that,either.Wecannotaffordtoassumethat.Weneedtoassumetostartatthelowestpointandworkupfrom
there.
WhatImgoingtodescribeforyouisawaytogetafoundationalunderstandingofScripture.Ithinkthat
sometimeswhenItalkaboutthispeoplecangettheideathatIthinkthatatopicalstudyissomethingwritten
bythedevil.Iamintheprocessofpublishingabookonatopic,okay.SojustknowIdonotthinkthat
topicalstudiesoratopicalapproachtolookingattheScriptureisnotavaluablethingorisbadatall.Ithink
itsfantastic.IthinktheyhelpustointegratebroadconceptsfromScripture.Theyareaformofteaching,and
theyoftenincorporatestudyelements.ButwhattheydoistheyattachScripturetoatopic.AndwhatIwould
liketoshowyoutodayishowtoletScriptureintroduceatopicasyouregoingthroughapassage.Theyare
twodifferentthings.Andagain,botharebeneficial.Oneisfoundational.
Ithinkwhathasoftenhappenedwithwomeninthechurchtodayiswehaveassumedthatthefoundational
pieceisinplacewhenitsnot,andwecontinuetohandthemonlyadietoftopicalthings.Andtheremustbe
somebalancethere.
Thefirstpointthatofmyninepoints(whichareprobablygoingtogofine)isthatyouwouldaskyourself
andyourstudentstodistinguishbetweendevotionalreadingandstudying.Orjustbetweentopical
studiesandlinebylinestudyoftheBible.Somakeadistinctionbetweenthesethings.

Youknowwhatdevotionalreadingis,right?Itslikeyoumightreadapsalmandmeditateonit.Itsnotabad
thing.Itsactuallyawonderfulthing.Buttheproblemisthatlefttoourowndevicesandbecausewearesoin
touchwithouremotions,alotoftimeswomenwilltendtogravitatetowardonlydevotionalreadingor
towardonlytopicalstudy.Andso,again,Imgoingtopushyouonwhatshardforyou.Imgoingtosay,
Letsmakesurethatweredoingthefoundationalpiece.
Identifyhowmuchtimeareyouspendingoneachkindofactivity.Andthenaskyourself,HaveIallocated
enoughofmytime?andaskyourstudents,HaveIallocatedenoughofmytimetobuildingafoundational
understandingoftheScripture?Sothefirstistodistinguishbetweenthedifferenttypesofreading.
Andheresanotherdistinctionyoumightwanttomake.TheresadifferencebetweenreadingtheBibleand
studyingtheBible.Readingissoyouthatcangetbreadth.Studyingissothatyoucangetdepth.Bothare
beneficial.
ImnevergoingtotellyoudontdoaBiblereadingplanwhereyougothroughtheBibleinawholeyear.I
amgoingtotellyouyouregoingtogetsomethingdifferentfromthatthanyouwillifyouaregoingata
slowerpacethroughabook.Sodistinguishbetweendifferenttypesofreadingandstudying.Identifythose
thatarefoundational.Givethemenoughtime.
Second,rememberwhotheBibleisabout.RememberwhotheBibleisabout.Nancyspentsometimeon
thisyesterday.Butjustincasewewerealittlefoggyonthatwiththeafterlunchtimecrowd.Whoisthe
Bibleabookabout?God.TheBibleisabookaboutGod.AndsoitsnotthatIthinkthatyoudontknowthat
orthatthewomenyouwillbeteachingdontknowthat.TheproblemisthatweoftensaythattheBibleis
abookaboutGodandthenreaditasthoughitisabookaboutus.Thatsright.
Andsooneofyourprimarychallengesasateacherwillbetokeepreframingthediscussionsothattheyare
lookinginthetextnotfirstforwhatistrueaboutwhotheyarebutfirstforwhatistrueaboutwhoHeis.This
isabookaboutwhoGodisbeforeitisabookaboutwhoweare.Itisdefinitelyabookaboutwhoweare.
ButtheknowledgeofGodandtheknowledgeofselfalwaysgohandinhand.Infact,thereisnotrue
knowledgeofselfapartfromtheknowledgeofGod.
WhenIreadinScriptureastorythatproclaimsGodasbeingmercifulandthenIseemyselfinrelationtothe
infinitemercyofGod,whatdoIlearnaboutmyownmercifulness?Itsnotgood,right?LikeIseemyown
abilitytoshowmercyinadifferentlight.AndaslongasImmeasuringmyselfagainstthepersonsittingnext
tome,IcanprobablyfeelprettydecentabouthowmercifulIam.ButthemomentthatIseeavisionofGod
highandliftedupwithinfinitemercy,Iunderstandmydeficit.AndmyheartbreaksbecausetheHolySpirit
intendsforitto.IcryouttotheLord,Changemydesires.
TheknowledgeofGodandtheknowledgeofselfalwaysgohandinhand.TheBibleisabookaboutGod.
Sowemustrepeatedlyremindourwomentoreaditassuch.
ThefirstquestionItellmywomentoaskwhentheyreadis,WhatareyouseeingaboutGodinthetext?
Now,themoretimetheyspendinthetextthatmayalter,itmaygrow,butthatsastartingpointforthem.
Sodistinguishbetweendifferenttypesofreading,rememberwhotheBibleisabout.TheBibleisabook
aboutGod.
Third,takealongtermview.Encourageyourwomentotakealongtermview.Imentionedearlierhowits
nosecretthatweareinaninstantgratificationculture.Andsooftenthatfiltersintoourtimeinteractingwith
theScriptures.Iwanttogivetenminutesofmyfocustothis,andIwanttoimmediatelyhaveareward.
WehaveadebitcardmentalitywhenitcomestoBiblestudy,sooften.Wearejustwantingtogetthroughthe
day,right?SoIwanttoputinmytenminutes,stickmycardinthemachine,withdrawwhatIneedtogetme
to5:00orto9:00orwhateveritis.Andthenjustgetmytankfilledfortheday.
IneedyourhelpgettingwomentoreframetheirunderstandingofBiblestudynotasadebitaccount
butasasavingsaccount.Itisasavingsaccountintowhichwefaithfullyplacedepositsdayafterday,
weekafterweek,yearafteryear.EvenifinthetenminutesthatIhavetogivetoitthatdaythereisno

out,shefoundmeagainonFacebook.Theresbeenthisrealweirdthinglike,Areyouthatsamegirlwho
wasatotalunderachieverinmyBiblestudyclass?LikeIthinkthatskindofwhattheyreallthinkingin
theirheads,right?Isthatyou?Youwroteabook?Really?Huh.
No.Herattitudewasactuallynotlikethatatall.Shewasfantastic.Shewaslike,Itssogreattoseeyou.
Whatsgoingon?AndIsaid,Well,tellmewhatsgoingonwithyou.Andshesaid,Iwasrecently
diagnosedwithstageIIIovariancancerandtheGodwhoIhavedevotedmylifetostudyinginHisWordis
showingHimselftobeeverybitasfaithfulasHehassaid.
Sheshadasavingsaccount.Andshesputdepositsinityearafteryearafteryear.Andshesinadarknight
ofthesoul,andHesabsolutelywhoHesaidHewouldbe.Doyouthinksheregretsoneminuteofthetime
shehasputintothatfaithfulstudy?Notone.Takealongtermview.
Whatthiswillrequireifyouhaveasavingsaccountmentalityandyoudevotethattoyourteachingandto
whatyouregivingtowomen,itwillmeanthatwehavetohonorthelearningprocessinadifferentwaythan
wehave.
Thelearningprocesswillnotberushed.Noonegetstobeaconcertviolinistovernight.LikeIsaid,thefirst
timetheysatdowntoplaytheviolinitwasdifficult.Andyouknowwhattheydid?Theycameback,and
theydiditagain.Andthentheycameback,andtheydiditagain.Andtheycameback,andtheydiditagain

Yearsago,theworldsforemostcellistwasinterviewedinReadersDigestmagazineandhewasasked,

Numberfour:Teachyourstudentstostayput.Teachthemtostayput.Thisissuchadifficultthing.Iwas
talkingtosomegirlsduringthebreakwhoarehelpingwithmiddleschool.Theyreteachingmiddleschool
girls.AndtheyareinaparticularlydifficultsituationbecauseIdontknowifyouvebeenaroundmiddle
schoolerslately.Theydontstayputlikeonanylevel.Andthentheyvegotthephone,andyoucanget
anywhereonit.BecauseImcertainlynotlikethat.Itsjusttheirproblem.Itsnotmineatall,right?

WeareincreasinglyinhabitingenvironmentswherenobodystaysputanywheremuchlesswithBiblestudy.
Weneedtotrainourpeopletopickabookorapassageandstaythere.Ilovecrossreferences.Weregoing
totalkabouttheminjustaminute.ButImtellingyou,dontgotothecrossreferenceuntilyouhavesatin
thepassage.Teachyourwomentopickabookandstaythere.
WewantourwomentohavenotaspotknowledgeoftheScripturebutacohesiveunderstanding.And
womenwhohaveexistedonasteadydietoftopicalstudiescanthopeformuchmorethanaspotknowledge
ofScripturebecauseitsbeenpulledfromhereandhereandhereandhere,andtheygettotheendofa
topicalstudyandevenifitsgoodandisbeneficial,manywomenwalkawaywithasensationof,Wow!

Scripturethatfeelmorereadilyaccessibletousthanothers.Butbeverycautiousthatyouarenotleading
yourwomenonlyintotheplacesthattheywillgoontheirown.Allright?

cantendonahighnote.Thereisnohighnote.Andthentheychoppedupaconcubineandtheyrapeda

whenwechoosewhatwewanttoteachtootherwomen,wechoosethatwithwhichwefeelahighcomfort
level.Howmuchbetterifwetookthemtotheplacethatevenwearescaredtogo?
Iwasterrified.Theycameback.Andwefoundthemessageinthereofredemptionthatweallneededtohear
becauseitwaswaitingthereforus.InoneofthedarkeststoriesintheBiblethereishopeandbeauty.Butit
wasnteasy.
Sowestudyallofit.OldTestamentandNewTestament,genealogies,Leviticallaws.Wemakeitourhope
thatwewillgettoallofitandinanorderthatmakesusuncomfortable.Sobesurethatyouareworkingin
suchawaythatyourwomenaregettingfullcoverageoftheScriptures.
Numbersix:Honorthecontext.Honorthecontext.Now,thereareseverallevelsofcontextthatweneedto
makesurewehonoranytimeweareinaparticularpassage.OneofthemisjustthisbaselevelofwhatIcall
thearcheologicalquestions.SoanytimeyousitdowntostudyabookoftheBible,beforeyousitdownto

Thatsit.Andthentheygettogether,andyoucantalkaboutit.Youcanthenbuildinalittlebitmorecultural
perspectiveforthemasyougo.Whatwecannotdoiscommitculturalimperialismwhenwereadatext.We
cannotimposeourmodernmindsetonanancienttextanywaythatwewant.
Oneoftheimportantaspectsofbiblicalinterpretationthatwehavetokeepinviewisthatatextcannotmean
somethingtomethatitnevercouldhavemeanttoitsoriginalhearers.Now,basedfromwhatIseeon
Instagramthismightbefallingbythewayjustalittlebit.
Weplaysuchapremiumonthispersonalmessagethatiscomingtome.Andcanyouheartheindividualism
ringinthere?Andhowmanyofthosepersonalrevelationsthatpeoplehave...Imnotsayingthatnoneof
themarevalid.Buthowmanyofthemwouldholdupinadecentsmallgroupdiscussionwherepeopleare
beinghonest?
Hey,Igetthatyoulikethisideabutitsnotthere,myfriend.Beforewecantalkaboutwhatthetext
meanstous,wehavetotalkaboutwhatthetextmeans.Thereisanobjectivemeaningthathasbeen
placedinthetext.Meaningisdeterminedbytheauthor.Now,weknowtheauthorisGodbutitalsohasa
humanauthoraswell.Meaningisdeterminedbytheauthor,anditisdiscoveredbythereader.Not
assignedbythereader,itisdiscoveredbythereader.
Yourjobisnottoreadsomethingandthenplacewhateverlensyoufeelbelongsonit.Yourjobistoask,

thatwerunupagainst.Anditreally,reallymakesadifference.
Somykidsgotopublicschool.Itsprobablygoingtobefine.[laughter]Theyreatahugehighschool.It

paragraphandsitandmeditateonitandsay,Howdoesthatchangemylifetoday?Youwouldnotdothat.
Andyouwouldnotcomebackthenextdayanddoitagain.Andyouwouldnotdoitforawholesemester
andthenexpecttowhat?Passalgebra,right?Whywouldwetreatthisbookinthesameway?
