In1975,ascientistnamedWallaceWallyBroeckerwroteapaperinwhichheaskedasimple
question:wastheEarthgettingwarmer?Whenthepaperwaspublished,someofBroeckers
colleagueslaughedathim.Manyofthembelievedthattheworldwasactuallycooling.
Historically,therehavebeenperiodsinwhichtheEarthstemperaturehasslowlyrisenand
cooledoverthousandsofyears.Thisisanaturalprocessthatcanbecausedbymanyfactors,
includingchangesinradiationfromtheSun,changesintheEarthsorbit,andvolcanicactivity.
However,climatechangecanalsobecausedbychangesintheamountofcertaingasesinthe
atmosphere.Broeckerhadnoticedthattheamountofcarbondioxideacolorless,odorless
gaswasslowlybuildingup.Whilesomecarbondioxideisproducedthroughnatural
processes,largequantitiesofitarealsoproducedbyhumans.Carbondioxideisgeneratedin
especiallylargeamountswhenweburnfossilfuels,suchasoil,coal,andnaturalgas.This
burninghappenswhenwedrivecars,useelectricity,andmakecertainproducts.When
releasedintotheatmosphere,carbondioxidetrapsheat.Broeckerreasonedthatifpeople
producedalotofcarbondioxide,thenenoughheatwouldbetrappedthattheEarthwould
begintowarm.Hecalledthisglobalwarming.
Severaldecadeslater,manyclimatescientistsagreewithBroecker:theEarthisheatingupand
humansarelargelyresponsible.Thiswarmingprocessisoftenreferredtoasclimatechange.
Morecarbondioxideisbeingproducedthaneverbefore.Everyyear,humansproduceabout8
billionmetrictonsofcarbon.2012wasthehottestyearinrecordedhistory.Recently,scientists
estimatedthatmorecarbondioxideexistsintheatmospherethanhasinoverthreemillionyears.
Whilescientistsunderstandhowclimatechangeworks,someofitseffectsarestilldifficultto
predict.Somescientistsexpectanincreaseinsocalledextremeweatherevents,suchas
hurricanesandfloods.Othersforeseeariseinlevelsofseawater.Whileexactlywhatchanges
willhappenareunclear,Broeckerhaswarnedthatpeopleshouldbepreparedforsomelarge
disturbances.InaninterviewwiththeGuardian,aBritishnewspaper,in2008,hecompared
theEarthsclimatetoawildanimal.Sometimes,whenprovoked,theanimalwillreact
violentlyandunpredictably.
"Ifyou'relivingwithanangrybeast,youshouldn'tpokeitwithasharpstick,"hesaid.
Whyarescientistsabletounderstandsomephenomena,likeclimatechange,inageneralway,
butarentabletopredictthechangestheywillhaveontheEarth?Partofthereasonis
becausemanylargeEarthsystemsinvolvefeedbackloopsprocessesthathelpamplify
(positivefeedbackloops)ordiminish(negativefeedbackloops)certainchanges.
Feedbackloopscanoccurintheclimatesystem,too.IfthetemperatureoftheEarthrises,it
canchangetheenvironmentsothatitproducesevenmoreheat.
Thereareanumberofdifferentwaysinwhichthisphenomenonoccurs.Scientistswhowork
intheArctic,atthenorthernendoftheEarth,havebeenreportingthat,everyyear,moreand
morefloatingseaicemelts.Inthelast30years,morethanonethirdoftheicethatappearsin
theArcticduringthesummerhasmeltedaway.
ThisworriesscientistsbecauseArcticiceplaysanimportantroleincoolingtheEarth
althoughnotinthewayyoumightthink.Whileweaddicetoourdrinkstomakethemcolder,
ArcticseaicecoolstheEarthinadifferentway.Ice,whichiswhitecolored,reflectslight.This
meansthatmuchofthesunlightthathitsicebouncesoffandissentrightbacktospace.
ReflectinglightawayhelpskeeptheEarthcool.
However,astheEarthheatsup,icebeginstomelt.Asicemelts,thisrevealsmoreofthe
darkercoloredlandoroceanwater,whichdoesntreflectheat,butabsorbsit.So,lesslightis
reflectedbackintospace,causingtheclimatestemperaturetoincrease.Astheworldgets
hotter,thiscausestheicetomeltevenfaster.Thisincreaseintemperaturecausesstillmore
icetomelt,whichcausestheworldtogethotter,etcThisisanexampleofapositive
feedbackloop,inwhichheatproducesmoreheat.
Similarly,thereareotherclimatesystemsthatcangetcaughtinfeedbackloops.Thereare
manygasesthat,likecarbondioxide,contributetoglobalwarming.Someofthesegasesare
trappedinthefrozentundraacrossAlaska,Canada,Russia,andothernorthernlands.Thissoil,
whosetemperatureisbelowfreezing,iscalledpermafrost.Whenpermafrostmelts,muchof
thisgasisreleasedintotheatmosphere.Thiscausestheatmospheretowarmup,whichmelts
morepermafrost,whichheatsuptheatmosphere,etcAgain,afeedbackloopensues,in
whichawarmclimateleadstothecreationofanevenwarmerclimate.
AmorecomplexexampleofasimilarphenomenoninvolvestheAmazonrainforest.When
temperaturesrise,therainforestexperiencesmoredroughtsandwildfires.Thiscausesmore
treestoburndown.Justaswhenhumansburnfossilfuels,theburningoftreescauseslarge
amountsofcarbondioxidetobereleasedintotheworld.Treesplaytwoimportantrolesin
preventingglobalwarming:theyhelpabsorbcarbondioxide,whichpreventsitfromtrapping
heatintheatmosphere,andrainforesttreeshelppumpwaterintotheatmosphere.When
treesburndown,lesswaterispumpedintotheatmosphere,whichleadstolessrainfall,which
leadstomoretreesburningwhichleadstomorecarbondioxidebeingproduced.Theseare
bothexamplesofpositivefeedback,butfeedbackcanbenegativetoo.Whennegative
feedbackoccurs,anoriginaleffectisdiminished.
BothpositiveandnegativefeedbackloopscanoccurinallkindsofEarthsystems,notjustina
systemrelatedtotheclimate.Forexample,therelationshipbetweendifferentspeciesofanimals
isakindofsystemaswell.Periodically,thepopulationsofcertainanimalswillwaxandwane.In
somecases,thepopulationofaspeciescanbecomestuckinanegativefeedbackloop.Thiscan
occurifapredatorbecomestoopowerfulanditspreybecomestooweak.Forexample,inthe
early19thcentury,humansbeganhuntingaspeciesofbirdknownaspassengerpigeons.Soon,
fewerbirdsexisted,whichmadeitmoredifficultforthespeciestomate.Asmatingdeclined,
fewerbirdswereborn,whichmadeitstillmoredifficultforthebirds.Thiscreatedanegative
feedbackloopinwhichthepopulationofthebirdscontinuedtofalluntiltheyarenowextinct.
Whilescientistsunderstandsomeofhowthesefeedbackloopswork,theylackadeep
knowledgeofthem,makingthemextremelyunpredictable.Thisisbecause,likeanycomplex
system,thesefeedbackloopsincludemanyvariables.Manyofthesesystemsarealso
interdependent,whichmeansthatmanyofthesefeedbackloopsaffecteachother.For
example,whenpermafrostmelts,itmakesthewholeworldhotter,notjusttheareaaround
thepermafrost.Andthesechangesarenotjustlimitedtotemperature.Changesinthe
amountofrainfallanareareceivescanleadtochangesinitsatmosphere.This,inturn,can
affecttheEarthstemperature,whichcanaffecthowmuchicemelts,whichcanaffecthow
muchrainfalls,andsoon.So,asmallchangetoaverycomplexsystemcanleadtoverybig
consequences.Thismakespredictingthebehavioroflargesystemsincrediblydifficult.
Someskepticsaboutclimatechangepointtothisuncertaintyasawayofcastingdoubton
whethertheworldisactuallywarming.However,beingunabletopredicttheeffectsofclimate
changedoesnotmeanthatitisnothappening.ThinkbacktoBroeckersanalogy.Ifyoupokea
wildanimalwithasharpstick,youmaynotbeabletoguessexactlyhowitwillreact.However,
evenifyoudontknowpreciselywhattheanimalwilldoitmaybiteyouorscratchyouor
justgrowlitsstillaverybadideatoprovokeit.
ScientistscontinuetodebateexactlywhathappensastheEarthstemperaturerises.Among
themostpopularideasarethatdryareaswillbecomeincreasinglydry,whilewetareaswill
becomeincreasinglywet;oceans,seas,andlakeswillrise;andglaciers,icecapsandsnow
coveredareaswillbecomesmaller.However,manyclimatescientistsagreethatapotential
wayofreducingtheeffectsofclimatechangeistocutdowntheamountofcarbondioxidein
theatmosphere.
