Instructional Objectives: (Not outcomes, but lesson objectives. Not a description of
lesson procedure, but an indication of what students will know or be able to do by the
end of the lesson).
Knowledge:
Students will identify and explain elements of Metis culture
Key Questions:
What is the focus question for this lesson? What are some related questions?
What term should we use to make this a category?
What will I look for in a web map?
Materials:
Excerpt material in envelopes
Flip paper
Preparation:
Prepare excerpt material/envelopes
Prep chart paper/post-its
Find clip art
Web page
Adaptations:
Incorporate both pictures and texts so that students who struggle with reading can still
participate.

Lesson Procedure:
(Use numbered or bulleted steps. Indicate lesson introduction, development and
conclusion to clarify the flow of the lesson. Write it with enough detail that a substitute
teacher could teach the lesson.)
Intro. Have students write on sticky notes one thing that they remember about the Metis
people and post it on a flip chart paper before class starts.
There will also be sheets of paper on tables with clip art flipped over that says Do not
turn over.

As a class I will call on six students to flip over sheets of paper. Each student will pick up
paper tell class what it is and what category it could stand for. They will then tape it up on
the whiteboard and write the category underneath.
These are the six categories that we will work with today
Activity: Divide students into groups of two. Students will look in an envelope at some
informational excerpts, words and pictures. They will group each of these items into one
of the categories.
Once students have grouped these things together, hand out web. Explain directions and
show example.
Students will fill two bubbles using information provided in front of them.
If time permits have students go find other groups that filled out other categories.
Closure: Student will add one post it note to the metis flip chart.
Assessment:
How will you know if students met your lesson objectives? What assessment tool or
strategy are you using? What are you looking for in this formative assessment?
Student responses during the categorization will allow me to observe participation
Student organization of pictures, words and paragraphs
Student web page will inform me of their participation/understanding
