Navigation Inspiration along with the
American Cancer Society and Kiwanis
International are working together to increase awareness of cancer screening
resources and provide supplementary
support to families who are facing the
uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis.

Eight Step Self Examination5


1.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, everyone


should do a full-body self-evaluation every month to
check for signs of skin cancer.3

Warning signs include:

Skin Cancer

Each year there are more new cases


of skin cancer than breast, prostate,
lung, and colon cancers combined.1
People who have had an organ
transplant are much more likely to
develop squamous cell carcinoma,
the second most common form on
skin cancer.1

A skin growth that changes in size and is an


unusual color; it may be black, brown, tan,
translucent, or even multiple colors3

A spot or sore that does not seem to be healing3

Moles, birthmarks, or other brown spots that:

-Have an uneven outline3

Use a sunscreen that protects


against UVA and UVB radiation, SPF
30 or higher.2

Check your hands; including the backs


and between fingers

4. Using a large mirror, look at your


arms, elbows, and underarms.

5. Move downwards, checking all areas of


the chest.

6. Using two mirrors, or a partner, look at


your back, shoulders, and the back of your
neck.
7. Scan the backs of your legs and lower
back.

Avoid intentional tanning, especially


indoor tanning beds.2
Wear protective clothing-hats, long
sleeves, pants.2

First, look at your face. Focus on your


ears, nose, lips and mouth. Use mirrors to help.
