Math: Telling Time

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to tell time by the hour and half hour, on both a digital
clock and an analog clock.
Students will be able to represent time either verbally, written, or
physically/visually by using a clock or computer.
Standard:
Measurement and Data
Tell and write time.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.B.3
Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
Materials Needed:
SmartBoard
Practice Clocks
Laptop/Tablet
Story bird
3 Practice Worksheets
Pencils
Clock Games for Computer
Youtube Videos
Dry Erase Markers
Paper Protector for Students, with Analog and Digital Clocks Worksheet
Tissues to for Dry Erase Clean Up
Lesson Steps:
Anticipatory Set:
Use SmartBoard to complete the Do Now: Either think about or write
down what time you wake up, eat dinner, or go to bed?
Have a few students share answers and ask them how do you know
what time you do______?
Now ask students how do we know what time it is? What do we use?
Share with students my StoryBird about telling time and clocks.
o https://storybird.com/books/telling-time-5/?token=jxtrd3yqzu
Use SmartBoard to talk about what is a clock? What are hours? What
are minutes?
Talk about the analog clock and its hands, explain the minute hand and
hour hand. Talk about how the hands move, show this on the practice
clock.
Watch Youtube video about clocks.
o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrayvaGIuMY

Explain to students what Oclock is, and compare hours vs half hours.
Talk about terms, half past, and 30 minutes.

Now lets tell time

o Students will have their own individual clock to practice with and
one student will come up to the smartboard. A practice question
will be modeled in front of the class.
o Questions will be posted on SmartBoard and students will have
to represent that time on practice clock. They will be asked to
talk about their answer with a friend before it is shown on the
screen. While going over the answers students will share their
thinking process with the class.
During this time, the teacher will be going around and to
each table talking to students about questions and
concerns.
Any common themes will be represented with the whole
class.
At this time the teacher will be assessing the students
o Students will then use their dry erase analog and digital clock to
write out and draw times. There will be a practice question
which will be model for the class. Students will turn and talk to a
friend while one student comes up and demonstrate the time in
front of the class on the SmartBoard. Students will explain to
others their thought process.
During this time, the teacher will be going around and to
each table talking to students about questions and
concerns.
Any common themes will be represented with the whole
class.
At this time the teacher will be assessing the students
o Students will then be given the task to complete of completing
worksheets. One question for each page will be modeled in front
of the class.
o Students will work with a friend to complete the tell time
worksheet, and they will have a choice to complete either Telling
Time to the Hour, or What Time is it worksheet. Students will
be able to use the class resources for support, the clocks, and
the dry easer worksheet.
During this time, the teacher will be going around and to
each table talking to students about questions and
concerns.
Any common themes will be represented with the whole
class.
At this time the teacher will be assessing the students

o Students will then be asked to come up to the SmartBoard to

answer the questions.
o Students will grab their iPad or laptop be given the choice of
websites to complete one computer game. Students again will
have access to all classroom resources.

Once students complete the game of their choice, students will be
given an exit card. Students will be asked to represent a certain time.
They will have a choice on how to demonstrate their knowledge of
telling time, students can use, laptops/tablets, dry erase board, the
practice clocks, or even the smartboard. The teacher will then keep a
record for each student.
If students finish the exit card early they can play another computer
game.

Multiple Means of Representation:

Students will start by using the Do Now, to connect to knowledge that they
know about telling time and clocks. Students will use lecture form, literature,
videos, and modeling to understand vocabulary and terms. Students will be
taught how to tell time by using multiple objects and manipulatives, such as
the practice clock, dry erase board, pencil and paper, laptop/tablet, and
SmartBoard to represent time. The teacher will model each object that way
they get an understanding of the proper engagement with the manipulatives.
Multiple Means of Engagement:
Students will practice telling time by actively participating, in classroom
teaching, working with partners, and during individual work. The teacher will
be giving the proper feedback to students during this time, because she will
be walking around and sharing common themes and questions with the
whole class. The teacher will provide students the option of choice, students
can pick out what worksheet and computer games they want to complete.
Students also have the choice to have access to classroom resources.
Activities vary from, worksheets, to using the clock for practice, using the dry
erase board, playing computer games, and the choice of an exit card. The
teacher will model all activities with the class before the students start
working on their own. Students will also be using technology throughout this
time of the lesson, they will be using StoryBird, SmartBoard, Youtube, and
computer games, while having access to hands on manipulatives. Students

will also be connecting their own lives during the Do Now, and will see just
how important telling time is in their daily lives.
Multiple Means of Expression:
Students will use a range of instructional materials, physical manipulatives,
and technology to demonstrate their understanding of telling time. Students
will be using both virtual and concrete clocks to help develop the concept of
telling time. The teacher will be asking students to explain their thinking
during the lesson, and individual work. The teacher will be monitoring
students process during Now Lets Tell Time, and keeping records of the
students. The teacher will use an exit card to assess if the student has an
understanding of telling time. The students will be able to use any classroom
resource to demonstrate their understanding of time. Students who are
struggling completing assessments, will be required to complete fewer
questions and have extended time to complete the exit card.
