Lesson Topic: CAD (Creo 2.0) Rover Tools Design Lesson

Write a brief summary or blog of your experiences teaching this lesson,
addressing the following questions:

What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)

For this lesson, students were being introduced to CAD (computer

aided-design) and deciding which tools that they wanted to design,
create, and include on their rovers for their space volcanoes
research mission. Students had a really good time looking at rovers
using the NASA Jet Propulsion app on the iPads to think about what
types of tools the existing rovers use. Next, student did really well
applying their learning to their own rover design and created tools
that would be needed to gather data on their destinations. I was
surprised by how engaged they were with the CAD program. The
CAD program that we use is very difficult for some to use. Some
students have an issue with the CAD interface which is basically the
graphics toolbar that engineers have to use during the design
process. I need to make sure that I explain the different tools before
they start using the program better.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives

attained?
The student performance objectives were attained because each
student in the group collaboratively designed and created tools
for their rover using CAD.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry,

and sense-making by all students?

The classroom activity centered on students using their prior

knowledge of their space volcano destination to choose tools that

would help them collect data. They also used inquiry in the lesson
as they researched pre-existing tools that NASA rovers use.

Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support

students construction of knowledge and understanding of
important scientific concepts and processes?

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will
you do differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.)
to improve student learning for all students?
