Lesson Topic: Earthquake Pre-Assessment Probe Lesson-Formative

Assessment
Write a brief summary or blog of your experiences teaching this lesson,
addressing the following questions:

What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)
For this lesson, I really wanted to gauge student knowledge or
determine any misconceptions that they may have about
whether an earthquake is a constructive and/or destructive force.
I found a really student friendly probe, that was more infographic
based to interest them in really reading closely what the probe
said. It worked really well. The students took their time and
answered in complete sentences which gave me a clear picture
of their background knowledge. However, some students chose
not to answer fully, but instead give me one or two words which
showed me that they really didnt understand the concept well
initially.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives

attained?
The student performance objectives were attained in that I
wanted the students to show me what they knew about the topic
and hook or engage them in what the unit was going to teach
them.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry,

and sense-making by all students?
The classroom activity centered on science understanding of the
topic of constructive and destructive forces and whether or not
students had misconceptions about what caused earthquakes to

occur. I use this probe to guide my instruction for the rest of the
unit and it also helps me to group students for activities in order
to differentiate their learning.

Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support

students construction of knowledge and understanding of
important scientific concepts and processes?
Being that this was a pre-assessment probe activity I really did
not get to in detail about the content that students were going to
learn so that I would not skew their thinking.

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will
you do differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.)
to improve student learning for all students?
I really would not change too much about the lesson because it
did prove to be fruitful in that I was able to use the data from the
pre-assessment probe to direct my instruction for the rest of the
unit.
