Before class

Photocopy one worksheet for each team and cut up the

squares where the lines are, so that you have eighteen
squares in total.

Procedure
1 Preteach these phrases: Its a thing which/that is used for ____+ing, Its used to +
infinitive and Its a kind of + noun.

2 Give an example of a definition: describe some objects in the classroom and asking
them to guess what you are talking about. For example, Its a thing which is used
for recording students names (answer: register), Its used to tell students what is
happening in the school; its a kind of information board (answer: noticeboard)

3 Organise the students into teams (with even numbers of students if possible) and
tell them to sit in a circle. Give out the pieces of paper and tell them to put them
in a pile in the middle of the desk.

4 Each student in turn takes a piece of paper from the top of the pile and defines the
object without giving the name. The student who guesses its name wins the piece
of paper. This student then takes the next piece of paper from the pile and defines
the object. The quiz continues until all the pieces of paper have gone. The winner
is the student with the most bits of paper.
