Researching sex abuse toward boys

[Document subtitle]

The social problem that I will be discussing is boys that have been sexually abused. Boys of
all cultures. The impact that this sort of trauma have on boys as they go through adolescence
and adulthood. My client characteristics: American Boys aged 5 through 18. Intervention being
considered would be child and family traumatic stress intervention. Child and parent/caregiver
are asked to practice coping skills taught in the session and are provided a family log to record
efforts. For boys in the age range of 12 through 18. In addition, boys age between 5 through 12
intervention being considered would be direct play therapy exposure therapy techniques. This
intervention would be to help minimize emotional and behavioral problems. The outcome
would be to confront their feelings so they may come to terms with the abuse, the abuser and
their own sexuality for boys from age 12 to 18. For boys aged 5 to 12 directive play therapy
outcome would be for fewer trauma symptoms.
Generally after a boy has been sexually abused there is a change in his personality Behavior
changes can range from unusual acting out to being very aggressive and violent. The world has
changed into an unsafe place where they feel the need to protect themselves.
There may be emotional changes as well. An open out-going boy may suddenly become
quiet passive and invisible. It may be obvious that he no longer feels good about himself.
Most boys develop a negative self perception of being damaged or broken. Unworthy of
love and affection. His sense of personal power has been taken away.

Boys are socialized to believe that to be men they cannot be victims. They have a tendency to
minimize abuse or deny it all together. Sexually abused boys can become dysfunctional men
because they were used as sexual objects. The guilt and shame become overwhelming for them

My question is: What interventions have the best research evidence supporting the
effectiveness of sexually abused boys aged 5 to 18 and men who were abused in childhood.
The practice need is to help boys and men overcome and develop coping skills from a traumatic
event such as sexual abuse. To become whole and complete individuals.
