Grandmas Kitchen
To Close July 6 for Holiday

With Heartfelt
Appreciation

Grandmas Kitchen at Hoffman United Methodist Church in West

Milton will be closed Wednesday, July 6, due to the 4th of July holiday.
Otherwise, regular serving hours are Wednesdays from 5-6:15 p.m.

Words will never be enough to say how great our community and surrounding communities are! When I was diagnosed with cancer it didnt take long to realize I wasnt
alone in the battle. My entire family was there every step
of the way, and the outpouring of love and support from
the community and surrounding communities was amazing.
The cards, the phone calls, the dinners brought in, and
then the unbelievable Poker Run and the Kenny Monnier
Golf Outing WERE ALL GREATLY APPRECIATED.
To those who put these events together Sandra
Miller, Rhonda Wysong-Dunlevy, Bobby Floyd, and
Beener Wood and to all the numerous volunteers and to
all those who attended and participated, I say THANK
YOU!
Its such a comforting feeling to know so many people
care. I love you all and WHEN I beat this Beast, I will be
first in line to help the next person.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we are once again reminded that freedom is not free.
Just as America fought for independence in 1776, American troops continue to defend freedom
around the world today. July Fourth is a day to honor the men and women who have sacrificed
so much to protect our liberty. Its a day to proudly celebrate our great country and the ideals it represents.

Flag RetiRement CeRemony

HonoRs national Holiday
BSA Troop 972 Leads Fitting Memorial
of Nations Greatest Symbol
The Boy Scouts of America Troop 972 in West Milton extends a
public invitation to a flag retirement ceremony on Sunday, July 3, 1
p.m., at the Lange Estate on Calumet Rd.
As they prepare for this years Independence Day, the scouts are
recognizing the need for anyone with worn or unserviceable flags to
bring them to this event for a proper and honorable retirement.
A used, worn-out flag cannot just be thrown away, says Scout
First-Class Michael D. Mayor. They must be shown the same respect
that you would show a person, because it is the highest American symbol. The United States Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8(k) states,
The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by
burning.
Anyone can bring a flag they have determined to be tattered, faded,
torn, or in disrepair and no longer a symbol worthy of representing the
Nation. If possible, please bring a brief written history of the flag, where
it was first flown, and if it was used in any overseas duty.
A brief reception will follow for any person interested in supporting
or joining Troop 972.
For additional information about BSA Troop 972, contact Stan
Dohner, Assistant Scoutmaster, at 937-266-6274, or at SDDOHNER972@gmail.com or by visiting http://bsatroop972.scoutlander.com/.

480 In Attendance

Milton-Union Alumni Banquet Held May 21

There were approximately 480 in attendance at the 128th Milton-Union Alumni Banquet on May 21. The
evening opened with remarks by Amy Rue Todd (1990), followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by George
Stamper Jr. (1991), and the Invocation by Kelsey Floury (2012).
Following the meal, prepared by Stillwater Valley Catering, Amy recognized guests and led the Roll Call
of Classes, with special recognition of milestone years.
Attending her 128th Alumni Banquet was 100-year-old Ruth Howdieshell, who graduated in 1932. Amy
presented Ruth with a white embroidered M-U Bulldog jacket in recognition of her many years of attendance.
Each representative shared remembrances and accomplishments of their class. The Class of 1951, celebrating their 65th year, was represented by Lowell Studebaker; Karen Beeman Randall represented the Class
of 1956, celebrating their 60th year; Marvin Rue represented his Class of 1961, celebrating their 55th year;
Sandra Murphy Magel represented the 50 year Class of 1966; Susan Sowers Bucholtz represented the 40 year
Class of 1976; and Teresa Polli Cheadle represented the 25th year Class of 1991.
Jill Weidner Stahl (1991), read the Memorial Tribute. Eighty-six M-U graduates have passed away since
the 2015 Alumni Banquet.
Yvonne Martindale Kochersperger (1971) recognized the inductees into the M-U Hall of Honor: Bob
Menker, Ted Studebaker, and Larry Dehus.
Dr. William Ginn recognized those being inducted into the M-U Athletic Hall of Fame: Doug Studebaker
(1971); Trent Thompson (1979); Erin Storer Cooper (1991); and Jennifer Ginn Thompson (2001). They will
be officially inducted, and a description of their many achievements described, during an awards ceremony to
be held on Saturday, Jan. 28, before the boys basketball game with Brookville. The public is welcome. You
may contact the high school Athletic Office for ticket information.
Following the business meeting, M-U Class Advisors Tracy Pair and Kelly Strick recognized those present
from the Class of 2016. Each stated their name and their future plans. David Wion, Class of 1976, then presented
the M-U Alumni Scholarships for 2016.
Amy Rue Todd closed the evening by thanking everyone for attending and offered thanks to all those who
had a part in planning another successful evening. She encouraged the Class of 2016 to always mark the third
Saturday in May on their calendars and attend the M-U Alumni Banquets of the future.

Covington Track
Resurfacing
Project
To Begin

$
$ """

Its amazing how the Village of Covington pulls together in times of need. The Bucc Boosters assembled a
committee to raise funds for the track resurfacing project and in just a few months almost $47,000 in
donations has been raised from about 120 individuals, businesses. and organizations. The Fraternal Order
of Eagles and Community Chest have once again proven to be vital resources for the Covington community,
as each of these organizations contributed almost one-third of the total funds collected. The track resurfacing should soon be underway, and will require closure from use for a short time. Pictured (L-R) are Gene
Gooding, School Superintendent, accepting the $15,000 check from Jack Young, FOE 3998 secretary, and
Jim Knick, FOE 3998 treasurer. Also witnessing the Eagles donation is Glen Hollopeter, Bucc Boosters
president. A banner will be displayed at the track recognizing the 120 donors. A big thank you goes out
to the Bucc Boosters fund drive committee, and all the charitable donors for their generous contributions!

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey

A Day To Remember . . .
I remember when I was about seven years old we went to a family reunion for
the Godfrey bunch. It was a great day, with plenty to eat, lots of cousins to play
with, and many aunts and uncles to tell each other what it was like growing up.
It was getting late, and some people had already left for home. We were still
playing and talking when someone got really sick. In a matter of minutes there
were dozens of adults on the sick list.
Parents started to examine all their children, but none of us were sick. In fact, we
asked if we could continue to play our games. As time passed by, we soon
heard the sounds of sirens. The rescue squad was called in. Family members
were having their stomachs pumped. An epidemic of food poisoning was
found. After investigating, the squad announced the cabbage rolls were the culprits. None of the children became sick, because they didnt like cabbage rolls.
Why am I telling you this story?
Because Sunday, a small group from our Sunday School class and book club
joined the Baker family for an old fashioned picnic. Everyone was asked to
bring a covered dish and lawn chairs. The Bakers furnished everything else. Including their swimming pool and outdoor games.
There was even homemade ice cream that went perfectly with all the freshbaked desserts. The meal was scrumptious, and the fellowship fantastic. The
day reminded me of the good old days... when friends and families met quite
often, when cousins were best friends, and where electronics didnt get in the
way of outdoor games like corn hole, hillbilly golf, and the standard deck of
cards.
To top it off, no one got sick. In fact, the worst that happened was we probably
gained few more pounds.

Thanks Ron, Debbie, and Stacey for a wonderful afternoon with great friends
and family. Especially with all the brothers and sisters in Christ. Stacey, youre
a wonderful example and teacher of His Word.

Darke County Parks Seeking Blacksmiths

Darke County Parks is looking for anyone interested in the time
honored trade of blacksmithing. People have been working iron for
over 3,500 years, and until the relatively recent past, the blacksmith
was the hub of the community. Everything from carriage springs to
horseshoes and meat forks to roofing nails came from the blacksmiths
shop. It is that heritage from over 200 years ago that the blacksmith
shop at Shawnee Prairie Preserve is trying to honor.
The park district is particularly interested in those with experience
in the blacksmith trade, especially Master Blacksmiths, but will take
anyone with a passion to learn.
To inquire about volunteering to work in the Shawnee Prairie Preserve Blacksmith Shop, please call the park office at 937-548-0165.
For general information about any Darke County Parks or the park
programs, email info@darkecountyparks.org or call the number
above.
