AKRON, Ohio (May XX, 2010) – For one week in May women across the county will be
putting down their lipstick and picking up a hammer to make a stand against poverty housing. In
Summit County the Zeta Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority will be joining
Habitat to help build a new home. The Women Build will take place Saturday May 8th at 3925
Moreland Ave. in Stow and is sponsored by Lowe’s.
Women from the community will be working alongside future homeowner Lathyia
McClendon and the Mayor of Stow, Karen Fritschel to build McClendon’s home. McClendon is
a single mom of three children who works as an Assistant Manager of group homes for United
Disability Services.
Women make up nearly 50 percent of Habitat for Humanity volunteer work force across
the country; yet because of lack of training, they account for less than 15 percent of workers on a
construction site. The Women Build program was established to encourage the involvement of
women in the construction of Habitat homes.
Habitat for Humanity of Summit County has been participating in Women Build week
since 2001. The organization is proud that women in the community are willing to support other
women by picking up a hammer and doing their part.
