Pre Session – required to participate in future sessions (must complete before June 10)
Introduction:
Are you looking for new ways to engage your students or your employees? Many of today’s top companies, such as IBM, Dell, BMW, and Sun
Microsystems and many universities are using a Web 2.0 tool called “virtual worlds.” The training opportunities in virtual worlds are limitless.
Companies and universities are using this new technology to reinvigorate their training and educational programs. Virtual worlds allow
additional opportunities to showcase your products, train your employees, share resources, and give one on one experience without large training
and travel budgets. The best part of virtual worlds is creating a whole new you, called an avatar. Come join the fun. To participate in this session
you will first need to do a system check to ensure that your computer and internet service provider are up to the task.
Objectives:
The objective of this virtual world pre-session is to determine if your computer and internet service provider are capable of running Second Life.
Unable to download and install Second Life (slow internet service, this is a large program)
Unable to open Second Life or system crashes frequently (possibly due to lack of memory or video card)
Unable to view graphics in Second Life (possibly due to lack of memory or video card)
Unable to modify your appearance
Unable to communicate with others in Second Life
Unable to log-on due to firewall settings
Frustration with this new technology
If you experienced problems, but would still like to participate you may try using a different computer, install additional memory, or perhaps
update your video card.

Biographies of Presenters
Probe Barbosa started researching how to use virtual worlds for the Medical Group Medical Association's (MGMA) online education
courses after attending The Innovations in Learning Conference in San Jose, CA last September. So far, Second Life is my virtual
world of choice. I do have an exciting life but having a Second Life makes life even more exciting. Probe (aka Will Probeck) is a
current master's candidate in the University of Colorado Denver's Instructional and Learning Technologies eLearning Design and
Implementation program.
Jillena Jaxxon spends her days and nights flying around the world looking for new and exciting locations. As an avid photographer, she
loves sharing her these locations with her virtual friends. Jillena enjoys exploring new islands and is an outgoing and adventurous
avatar who is no longer afraid of heights. After many years, Jillena has finally learned to read a map and teleport to a variety of islands.
When not in her virtual life, Jillena (aka Jill Perry) works at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the School of Education assisting
in the field experience program. Jillena is a current master's candidate in the University of Colorado Denver's Instructional and
Learning Technologies eLearning Design and Implementation program.
Michelle2381 Parnall spends her Second Life exploring new places and learning to fly. She is working on learning how to develop land
for eFresnoState, a new SL island. Thanks to her friends in the Immersive 4 she has learned how to take pictures and turn herself
around in Second Life. In her first life, Michelle2381 (aka Michelle Fisher) works for California State University, Fresno as an
Instructional Designer in their Digital Campus. Michelle is a current eLearning Design and Development Certificate program
candidate.
