SURVEYING
(CIVIL ENGINEERING)
Time: 3hours Max.Marks:80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
---
1.a) Name the various accessories required for linear measurement. Describe them.
b) Find the sag correction for a 50m steel tape under a pull of 10kg in two equal spans of
25m each. Weight of 1 cubic cm of steel = 7.86gm. Area of cross section of the tape =
0.10sq.cm [8+8]

2.a) Describe the various types of random errors in taping.

b) A tape is 20m at a standard tension of 75N, and its cross-section 6.0mm x 0.2mm.
If the applied tension in 50N, and Ε = 1.95 × 105 N / mm 2 , calculate the correction
[8+8]

3.a) What are the various methods of contouring? Discuss the merits and demerits of each.
b) Find out the difference in levels between points A and B if curvature and refraction
effects are taken into consideration in the following case.
R.L of A = 100.000
Height of instrument at A = 1.5000
Reading of staff at B = 1.8000
Distance AB = 450m [8+8]

4.a) Explain the method of determining the area of a multilevel section by the method of
independent co-ordination.
b) The following perpendicular offsets were taken at 10m intervals from a survey line to
an irregular boundary line.
2.90, 5.45, 4.25, 6.40, 8.30, 6.00, 3.35, 4.90, 5.70
Calculate the area included between the survey line, the irregular boundary line and the
first and last offsets by
i) Average-ordinate rule
ii) Trapezoidal rule and
iii) Simson’s rule [8+8]

5.a) What is latitude and departure? How can you determine them for a line?
b) To determine the elevation of the top of a flag staff, the following observations were
made:
Instrument Station Reading on BM Angle of elevation Remarks
A 1.350 10056′ RL of BM
B 1.145 7 16′
0 =250.000

Stations A and B and the top of the aerial pole are in the same vertical plane. Find
the elevation of the flag staff, if the distance between A and B is 50m? [8+8]

6.a) Enumerate the different errors in tachometric surveying. How can you minimize them?
b) To determine the gradient between two points A and B, a tachometer was set up at
another station C and the following observations were taken keeping the staff
vertical.

Staff at Vertical angle Axial hair reading

A +5015′00′′ 1.300, 1.610, 1.920
B +0 15′45′′
0
1.100,1.410, 1.720

If the horizontal angle ACB is 350 20′ , determine the average gradient between A and C.
Take k=100 and C=0.0. [8+8]

7.a) Enlist the different types of horizontal circular curves. How can you select the most
suitable type for a particular site?
b) The chainage at the point of intersection of the tangents to a railway curve in 3646 links
and the angle between them is 1240 . Find the chainage at the beginning and end of
the curve if it is 40 chains radius and calculate the angles which are required in
order to set out this curve. [8+8]

8.a) What are the uses of an Electronic total station?

b) What are the objectives of Geodetic Survey? [8+8]
