DATA PROCESSING DATA- is a raw material that is used as input to a data processing system.

The data goes through a series of planned activities processing to produce a desired result which is output. DATA PROCESSING- is the arrangement of data into a more understandable and useful form. It involves: collecting, processing, distributing and summarizing of facts and figures to achieve the desired results. DATA PROCESSING is therefore defined as the arranging of related data in an organized manner in order to provide useful INFORMATION. INFORMATION- is the result we get when the words, numbers, and symbols are organized so that they have meaning and usefulness. Characteristics of Information Information should be: 1. Timely 2. Accurate 3. Complete 4. Reliable 5. Concise

Basic Data Processing Cycle Steps in data processing cycle are: 1. Origin of Data 2. Input 3. Processing 4. Output

Step 1: Origin of Data- is the initial capture of raw data, facts or figure or some form of document whenever a transaction occurs.

If the input is to be processed automatically by electronic equipment. 5. 3. a. The data recorded for processing is called input. Step 2: INPUT. The input of data from the source document is recorded is such form that it can be easily processed. which is alphabetically and numerically. 1. If the input is to be processed automatically by electronic equipment.physical arrangement of data to chronological order. or diskettes so that it can be processed on electronic. description of the item you bought. b. 2. Origin means the beginning or start of something. and the price. time. Summarizing. 4. the step will involve recording the data from the source document into card. In business the data to be process originates in a variety of business papers sources. 4. telephone number.is the process of identifying and grouping data that consist of the actual operations performed on the input. the step may involve putting the information about the sale is a Sales Journal so that the store can get a total sale of figure for the month. 2. Calculating.1. d. 3.is the presentation of data in a compressed and meaningful manner. c. . Examples of source document: when you go to a store to buy a stereo on a charge account. Classifying. cards. the sales clerk fills out a sales slip work your name and address. Recording. Sorting.is the manipulating or processing of data which consist of the actual operations performed on the input. or checks. tapes. Source documents refer to the business papers used to record data for the first time. Other source document may include invoices.related to the documentation of intermediate figures and facts resulting from calculation.sources are collected and converted into a form acceptable for processing that is recorded in the same form that the machine can read. e.consist of performing one or more arithmetic operations of data. The data written on sales slip is the origin of data recorded on the source document which is the sale slip. Step 3: PROCESSING.

EXPANDED DATA PROCESSING CYCLE There are two more steps needed in order to complete the DATA PROCESSING CYCLE. calculator.this step refers to the distribution of the useful information.Step 4: OUTPUT. Electro-Mechanical Data Processing. The printed statement of account can be called an output because it contains information useful for the customer and the company well. 3. adding machines. 1. Majority of the work is done by man. 1. The output data is called the REPORT DOCUMENT. The final step in the data processing cycle provides the output of the data. 2.is the presentation of data in a compressed and meaningful manner. the information that has been processed is organized and arranged in a usable form. DISTRIBUTION.information provided by the output cycle are placed in storage for future use and can be used for further processing at a later date. Manual Data Processing. TYPES OF DATA PROCESSING 1.processing of data with the use of electro-mechanical machines such as typewriter. 2. 3.processing of data by means of the human labor. Electronic Data Processing. 2.processing of data with the use of the computer and require less human intervention. STORAGE. . In this step.
