Please answer the following questions in complete sentences.

1. Based on Catherine’s written description of her brother, how does he view religion? (Consider what
he makes his sister and Heathcliff do versus what he does.)

2. Starting at the top of page 27 and ending at the bottom of page 29 is a dream that Lockwood has. He
does not go to the church with Joseph, he dreams it. What is the tone of this dream? (Look back at
your sheet about tone. Think of a more descriptive word than just happy, sad, good or bad.) What
makes you think that this is the tone?

3. Lockwood wakes up from his dream on page 29. Everything that happens from there to page 31 when
Heathcliff comes in is what Lockwood actually experiences. He does not dream that he sees a
soaking wet girl talking to him in the window; he truly believes that
he sees this ghost. How does Lockwood react to this ghost?

4. When Heathcliff opens the window and calls out to Cathy, Lockwood says, “there was such an
anguish in the gush of grief that accompanied this raving, that my compassion made me overlook its
folly.” A folly is something foolish. In your own words (don’t just rearrange Bronte’s words)
explain what Lockwood means here.
5. On page 39, what does Lockwood say makes humans vain? What do we desire?

6. Do you agree with the above statement?

7. Consider Heathcliff as a psychologist or psychiatrist might. What two links can you find between his
treatment as a child and his treatment of the people around him?

8. Does Heathcliff just take his abuse? What indications does Bronte give us that perhaps he is not as
quiet and reserved as he seems?

9. The end part of this section is told through the point of view of Nelly Dean. Whenever we hear a
story (in a novel or in real life) we need to consider how someone’s personal feelings or personal
experiences shape the way he or she views the world. This is called a bias. Someone who can tell a
story without involving his or her personal take can be called unbiased. Is Nelly biased or unbiased
when telling the story of Heathcliff? What are two things that tell you this?
