MATHEMATICS AREA

I. COURSE TITLE : PLANE AND SPHERICAL TRIGONOMETRY

II. COURSE NO.: Math 103 ( 3 UNITS )

III. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Plane and Spherical Trigonometry is a course for IT students. The course deals with the study of triangles particularly the relationship between the sides
and angles and their measurements; the six trigonometric functions of an acute angle of a right triangle; the six trigonometric functions of any angle; the solutions
of right and oblique triangles; the radian or circular measure of an angle; the fundamental identities; the inverse trigonometric functions; the graph of inverse
trigonometric functions; exponential and logarithmic functions and spherical trigonometry.

IV. COURSE RATIONALE:

This course enables the students to develop their skills that will enable them to study effectively more advanced courses in mathematics. Furthermore,
students should gain an appreciation of mathematics as a logical science, and the subject matter should be expounded in such a way that it conforms to the
experience and maturity of the students.

V. COURSE PRE-REQUISITE: Math 102(Modern College Algebra)

VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

General Objectives
At the end of the course, the students are expected to have a deeper appreciation of the course; acquired manipulative skills of the different
concepts, rules and theorems used and applied in Trigonometry.

Specific Objectives
A. Cognitive Skills
1. explain the meaning of certain mathematical, algebraic and trigonometric concepts;
2. apply these concepts in:
2
2.1 classifying the triangles and the angles of a triangle;
2.2 determining the relationship between the sides and angles of a triangle;
2.3 defining the six trigonometric functions;
2.4 solving expressions and word problems involving triangles;
2.5 graphing and interpreting trigonometric functions and their inverses;
2.6 solving trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic equations

B. Psychomotor Skills
1. display ability to think effectively;
2. demonstrate ability in solving trigonometric problems;
3. use the calculator effectively as a tool in computation.

C. Affective
1. become aware of the importance of the course as a foundation of higher mathematics;
2. appreciate the need for solving problems in a systematic manner;
3. develop patience and persistence in solving problems.
4. analyze word problem with precision and accuracy;

VII. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Worktext, scientific calculator, protractor, handouts, manipulative objects.
