Audiolingual method

(approach)
Name : Karla Aranda
Characteristics of the approach
 New material is presented in a form of a
dialogue.
 Based on the principal that language learning

is habit formation, the method fosters

dependence on mimicry, memorization of set
phrases ad over- learning.
 Structures are sequenced and taught one at a

time.
 Structural patterns are taught using repetitive

drills.
Definition :
 Its central goal is to make learners fit for
the fluent oral use of the target language
in everyday situations. Reading and writing
were considered to be supportive skills only.
In quite a few respects the goals and methods
of the Audio-Lingual Approach are similar to
the ones of the Direct Method.
 Little or no grammatical explanations are
provided; grammar is taught inductively.
 Skills are sequenced:

listening,speaking,reading ,and writing are

developed in order.
 Teaching points are determined by

contrastive analysis between L1 and L2.

What teachers do:
 Conduct class in the target language.
 Lead class through drills focusing on

grammatical concepts to avoid L1

interference.
 Reinforce grammatically correct answers.
 Maintain a lively atmosphere to keep

students`attention during drills and

repetition.
