COURSE DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the principles and practices of international bank
management. This course is very timely because of Miami's importance as a full-service specialized Latin
American banking center and because of the employment opportunities in this field. The course introduces
the subject by describing the development of international banking and the growth of the international
commercial and investment banking functions. It addresses offshore centers and the role of banks in debt
and equity markets, and focuses on the various types of bank services, such as international loans (including
syndications and project financing), foreign exchange, and private banking. Further, it examines the causes
of recent debt crises, the types of risk inherent in international banking, the supervisory and regulatory
framework, and emerging trends in global banking.

International banking is expected to gain additional momentum in the years ahead as a result of
opportunities in such "global growth drivers" as Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
