Winter meals that cool a temper and warm the belly

On a cold and wet long weekend
with soaking jean cuffs after a day of
dodging puddles and potholes, I was
in no mood to deal with pretension
in any form.
My mate and I found ourselves at
Carrie Bryan’s Cafe in the Rose Bay
Hotel.
It had just the laid back atmos-
phere we were looking for, as well
as something special. Trains.
Miniature trains ran on tracks
around the ceiling and every now
and then they would kick into ac-
tion, complete with ‘choo-choo’
sound effects.
At least someone’s been listening
to the Village Voice’s calls for more
transport services.
But we were there for the food.
While the promise of traditional bar

menu our plans to stick to pub ba-
sics went off the rails.
We ordered garlic Turkish bread
($4) to start, which was full of but-
tery garlic goodness.
For mains, I chose the roast
pumpkin and Moroccan chicken ri-
sotto ($16.50), a real winter warmer
that came topped with parmesan
cheese. My friend had the oven
roasted chicken supreme ($20),
served on potato and leek rosti,
topped with tomato chutney and
sugar snap peas.
Spying on the diners around us,
the burgers and schnitzels looked
like a good deal as well.
We happily polished off our
meals, washing them down with a
beer while trainspotting and enjoy-
ing entertainment by a “colourful lo-
cal” who was doing an impromptu
jig in the dining room.
It’s a shame he wasn’t doing the
locomotion.
