“ChE Palakasan 2010”

August 7, 2010

One of the activities of the Adamson University Chemical Engineering Student Society
(AdUChESS) is the annual ChE Palakasan, where the chemical engineering students
compete in various indoor and outdoor games in order to showcase their talents in the
said various games. This activity not only promotes camaraderie among its members but
also promotes physical wellness as well as a head start for the preparation at both RSO
Sportsfest and PICHE Sportsfest.

In this ChE Palakasan, there are six teams trying to vie for the overall champion at the
said event. Those teams, better known as “units” were first organized last school year by
both the ChE Department and the AdUCheSS alumni officers in order to promote better
camaraderie among its members by removing the batch issues and disputes. The six units
are the Bleachers, Crushers, Crystallizers, Distillers, Minglers, and Reactors.

In the said activity, each unit competed in eight events which are divided into major and
minor games. The major games were the all-time favorite basketball and volleyball while
the minor games are tug-of war, chess, word factory, tail of the dragon, cheering
competition, and t-shirt design competition. All major events have a 10, 30, 40 and 50
points for the participation, third, second and first place. On the other hand, the tug-of-
war, chess, word factory, and tail of the dragon have 5, 10, 20 and 30 points respectively.
Lastly, the cheering competition and t-shirt design competition had 5 points for the
participation and 25 points awarded to the victor.

Despite all the venue shifting, time delays,

commotions, and the drama, the activity
was held at the JP courts on August 7,
2010. The registration started at around
8:00 am and there was a minor game
which is like a “warm up” or “teaser” to
the main event- the “Tail of the Dragon”.
The teaser event was a huge hit for all the
members of the organization. The six units
competed with each other until the top
three were realized. The Crystallizers,
Minglers, and Reactors were the finalist of
the said event and in the end; Reactors’
outlasted them all. Minglers’ and Reactors’ on Tail of the Dragon
The main event had finally begun after series of warm up Invocation was led by Roselle
Milan followed by the National Anthem led by. Ronessa Castro. Opening Remarks were
both given by the president Maychelle Ann Protacio and adviser Engr. Jerry Olay and
lastly, the Oath to Sportsmanship was led by James Cudiamat. Then, the cheering
competition had started to further waken the units. The event was dominated by the
Bleachers in terms of its lively cheer and cool moves. Next is the T-shirt design contest.
Each unit displayed their colorful and awesome unit shirts but only one of them caught
our adviser’s/judge’s attention and it was the simplicity and elegance of a radiation sign
which signifies the unit Reactors.

After that, the various games all started at around 10:00 am. The games were held
simultaneously so that every unit will be busy in participating at events, cheering and
boosting the morale of their players.

In chess, each unit has a male and female representative. There were clashes in a round
robin style of match in order to eliminate the color issues pertaining to the game. Every
player in the game was very serious at thinking on how to attack and counter attack their
respective opponent’s pieces and win the game. All of them showcased their skill in
careful planning on what to move, what to protect, and what to sacrifice and what to
attack in order to gain initiative and upper hand at the chess board. The men category was
won by Crushers, which has a flawless 5-0 record, followed by Minglers, which has 4-1,
only losing to Crushers, and Distillers, who has a 3-2 record. The female category was
still undetermined but so far it is led by the Reactors, which has a 3-0 record, followed by
Distillers, which has a 2-0 record.

Next is the word factory. This is like chess, which has a male and female category and a
round robin style of match in order to eliminate the luck factor in terms of juggling up the
letters. This sport showcases the talent of the players at forming words among scrambled
letters and also further enhances the vocabulary of players, officials and audience alike.
Every player fully utilize the three minute sand timer of the game in order to jumble up at
connect simple and complex words which may be not found by their respective
opponents.

In the tug-of-war event, each unit displays

not only their brute strength but also their
ability to act in unison within their
respective players. This event is an
elimination type of event with one
wildcard. As the rope were stretched out
and the marker steady in the middle within
the grasp of the official, there is a long
steady silence between the opposing teams,
waiting eagerly for the word “go”. After
hearing it, loud cheers were heard up to the
members to their players and the team
leader is yelling “pull” in order for them to act as one big force. After all the shouting,
cheering and bragging of each of the units, the two teams that competed in the finals were
Bleachers and Minglers, while the Crystallizers and Reactors competed for third place. In
the Crystallizers versus the Reactors, the Reactors were pulling out the Crystallizers and
it seems that Crystallizers will lose but as the marker was a quarter away from the line,
the players of the Crystallizers shouted as one and pulled the rope very strong while the
Reactors lose their grip and momentum and thus Crystallizers won. The finals were the
best as both the Bleachers and Minglers were dead even for the first minute until the
entire sudden; Bleachers try for a one big pull as the Minglers collapses. Bleachers was
awarded first place, followed by Minglers and Crystallizers.

In volleyball, each unit is comprised

of a mix of men and female players.
It shows their strategy in ball placing
as well as their skills to serve, pass,
set and spike the ball towards the
opponents’ court. The first match
was between Bleachers and
Crushers. It was a three set match
with the first one goes to Bleachers,
the second goes to Crushers and the
final set goes to Bleachers. The
second match was between Minglers
and Reactors that was won by
Reactors in also a three set match. The third match went to Crystallizers after sweeping
the Distillers by two straight sets. The wildcard was awarded to Crushers for having the
closest game with a deficit of two points against the Bleachers.

In basketball, the units present their

lineup with style as each and every
player show off their unique moves
and abilities in ball handling,
passing and shooting. The first
match was owned by the Minglers
over the Crystallizer by almost a
half deficit. The second match was
between Crushers and Distillers.
This match was very dead even and
thus it takes an overtime to break
the tie between the opposing units.
During the last 2 minutes, Crushers
have broken the tie and have
secured a nine point lead against Distillers and thus winning the game. Lastly, the match
between Bleachers and Reactors, reactors tried to put a pressure to Bleachers at the first
half but unfortunately, Bleachers were too much for Reactors as they won the game.
As the typhoon Ester hits the country, the semifinals for both basketball and volleyball
were hampered.

Last August 11, 2010, the AduCheSS officers and

unit masters gathered for a meeting about the
continuation of the ChE Palakasan, since there was a
conflict in activity schedules and venue reservations,
majority of them chose not to continue the event and
just sum up all the corresponding points of each unit.
Units competing for the semi finals that was not
finished (volleyball, basketball and chess) were
awarded 40 points for outdoor, and 30 point for
indoor. The waiting team for the final games was
awarded 50 points for outdoor and 30 points indoor.

Trophies and Certificates for the winners
