RESUMO

Ayahuasca é uma bebida sacramental, um chá psicoativo preparado

através do cozimento de duas plantas originaria da Amazônia, o cipó
Banisteriopsis caapi, conhecido também como Jagube ou Mariri, e as folhas do
arbusto Psychotria viridis, conhecida como Chacrona ou Rainha.
Primeiramente utilizada por tribos indígenas, vindo partir da década de 30, a
ser conhecida e utilizada também em grandes centros urbanos, com isso, o
presente estudo investigou alguns possíveis “riscos” da ingestão da ayahuasca,
e também alguns aspectos do seu uso como forma terapêutica, alem de
aspectos religiosos e sociais, como descrição das principais instituições
religiosas que fazem uso do chá. Investigou-se também, na parte química, os
seus principais alcalóides e sua ação no organismo. Segundo adeptos do chá,
ele provoca uma alteração no estado mental, o que possibilita uma reflexão
profunda sobre fatos de suas vidas, assim sendo um meio de facilitação do
autoconhecimento por meio da introspecção.

ABSTRACT

Ayahuasca is a sacramental drink, a psychoactive prepared by cooking

two plants originally from the Amazon, the liane Banisteriopsis caapi, also
known as Jagube or Mariri, and the leaves of the shrub Psychotria viridis,
known as Chacrona or Rainha. Primarily used by indigenous tribes, coming
from the 30s, to be known and used also in large urban centers, thereat, the
present study investigated some possible “risks” from the ingestion of
ayahuasca, and some aspects from its use in a therapeutic form too, besides
the religious and social aspects, as a description of the major religious
institutions that make use of tea. It was also investigated, in chemical part, their
major alkaloids and their action in the organism. According to adherents of the
tea, it causes a change in mental status, which allows a deep reflection on the
facts of their lives, therefore a means of facilitating self-knowledge through
introspection.
