WHAT IS A BTS?
•A BASE TRANSCEIVER STATION IS A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT
THAT FACILITATES WIRELESS COMMUNICATION
BETWEEN USER EQUIPMENT OF A NETWORK.

•BTS is also referred to as the radio base station (RBS),
node B (in 3G Networks) or, simply, the base station
(BS).

Wireless Sensor Networks

•Machinery monitoring & Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM / PHM / RUL)

•Remote site biochemical warfare (BCW) toxin monitoring
•Personnel monitoring and secure area denial
•Optical MEMS human biosensors

INTERFACE FOR BASE
TRANSCEIVER SYSTEM
•AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THE BTS UNIT IS
CONSIDERED IN THE GSM ARTITECHTURE AS A PART OF
THE BTS IS THE TRANSCODER RATE ADPATER UNIT.
also known as T.R.A.U

•IT IS FULLY DEFINED IN GSM RECOMMENDATIONS.

•IT ALLOWS SYSTEM OPERATOR TO PURCHASE SWITCHING

EQUIPMENT FROM ONE SUPPLIER AND RADIO EQUIPMENT
AND THE CONTROLLER FROM ANOTHER.

FUNCTIONS OF A BASE
TRANSCEIVER STATION
1.To transmit and receive radio signals from a mobile units over
an air interface.

2.Transcoding signals to bring 13 kbps speech to a standard data

rate of 16 kbps and then combining these signals.

3.Random Access Detection is made by BTS.

TYPES OF ANTENNAS USED IN MOBILE
COMMUNICATION

1.GENERALLY 3-SECTOR OR 3-ANTENNA IS USED IN

MOBILE TOWERS – EACH ANTENNA AT AN ANGLE
OF 120 DEGREE.
2.IN CASE OF NATIONAL HIGHWAY 2-ANTENNA OR
2-SECTOR IS USED.
3.SINGLE ANTENNA OR MICROBTS IS USED IN
METRO STATIONS, SHOPPING MALLS AND
MULTIPLEXS.
SOME VISUAL EXAMPLES
SOME USEFUL
INFORMATION
1.THERE ARE 2 WAY COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MS TO
BTS AND ALSO FROM BTS TO MS.
2.TWO WAY MEANS UPLINK & DOWNLINK.
3.UPLINK FREQUENCY- 890MHz TO 915MHz.
4.DOWNLINK FREQUENCY -935MHz TO 960MHz.
5.BOTH UPLINK & DOWNLINK HAVE A DIFFERENCE OF
25MHz.
6.WHEN FREQUENCY IS MORE IT MEANS THERE IS MORE
LOSS.
7.MOBILE WATTAGE=0.8W TO 2W.
8.BTS WATTAGE=20W.
9.EVERY BTS HAVE 16 HOPPING FREQUENCY, WHICH IS
USED TOTALLY FOR TRAFFIC.
ADVANTAGES OF B.T.S
•LESS LOAD ON THE EXPENSIVE ABIS INTERFACE.

•HIGHER BANDWIDTH GENERATION.

•CONTROL OVER THE BASE BANDWIDTH.

•LONG RANGE OF FREQUENCIES AVAILABLE.

THANK YOU.
