AUTOMATIC RECIPROCATION OF A DOUBLE
ACTING CYLINDER

 The sequence valves are used to produce automatic

reciprocation of hydraulic cylinder. This can be designed as
below:
 Two sequence valves, each of which senses a stroke completion
by the buildup of pressure to pilot operate the DCV (Directional
Control Valve).
 Each check valve and corresponding pilot line prevents shifting
of the hydraulically pilot operated three position, four way DCV
until particular stroke of the cylinder has been completed.
 The check valves are needed to allow the pilot oil to leave either
end of the DCV while pilot pressure is applied to the opposite
end. This permits the spool of the DCV to shift as required to
either left or right.
 The method of reciprocation is illustrated by the below figures.
WORKING OF THE CIRCUIT

 When the spool of the DCV is moved to the right, the fluid from the
pump enters into the right chamber of the double acting cylinder.
 As the fluid is pressurised by the pump, it moves the piston towards the
left.
 This is shown in Figure-2.
 As shown in Figure-2, when the piston of the double acting cylinder
reaches the left position, it stops.
 The pump is still supplying the fluid. As the piston is in the stationary
position, there is an increase in pressure in the right chamber of the
cylinder.
 As the pressure increases beyond a certain level, the right check valve
releases the fluid.
 Thus, the fluid drains to the right envelop of the DCV.
 The drained fluid applies pressure on the spool of the DCV,
moving it to the left.
 Thus, the DCV is automatically moved to the left (Figure-3).
 The same process is repeated on the left position and again the
DCV shifts to the right.
 Thus, automatic reciprocation of hydraulic cylinder is obtained.
