ARTERIOGRAM

Definition
‡ imaging test that uses x-rays and a special dye to see inside the arteries. ‡ done to see how blood moves through the arteries, and to check for any blocked or damaged arteries. ‡ Also called Angiography

Nursing Responsibilities
BEFORE: ‡ Advise patient to stop taking aspirin or other anti-clotting drugs ‡ Advise patient to drink plenty of fluids before the test ‡ Ask patient if he/she is allergic to iodine ‡ Ask patient if he/she has kidney problems because the dye can be mildly toxic to the kidneys

Nursing Responsibilities
‡ Shave the groin or arm area ‡ Advise patient to shower/bathe the night before or in the morning of the test, with special attention to the groin or arm area ‡ Advise patient not to eat any food the night before the test ‡ Remove any jewelry, nail polish/artificial nails or hairpins before the test

Nursing Responsibilities
During: ‡ Position the patient on the x-ray table ‡ Connect the patient to an EKG monitor ‡ Assist the radiologist in making the incision and in inserting the catheter ‡ When the needle is inserted, inform the patient that he may feel a little discomfort and will show a variety of symptoms depending on the area where the arteriogram is made.

Nursing Responsibilities
‡ When the catheter is in place, tell the patient to hold his or her breath several times for about 5 to 15 seconds and lie perfectly still to prevent distorting the x ray pictures

Nursing Responsibilities
After the test ‡ Advise the patient to keep straight and not move for several hours the arm/leg in which the catheter has been inserted ‡ Advise patient to increase fluid intake ‡ Advise patient to stay in bed for approximately 6 hours ‡ Check blood pressure, foot pulses and puncture site

Nursing Responsibilities
‡ Advise the patient to keep affected arm/ leg extended not elevated ‡ Advise patient to avoid hot baths or showers for at least 12 hours after the procedure
