Lucky isthe technologist who works a mere 50-hour week. Most technologists work
more and then are on call for those inevitable emergencies. Technical employees love
reliable systems, and they’re in a position to know how reliable Samba is. Samba is an
easy sell for fellow technical employees.

The one fly in the ointment is a perception that Windows skills are more marketable than
UNIX or Linux skills. Although right now there are more jobs in the Windows world,
there’s considerable evidence that UNIX and Linux salaries outpace those of equivalent
Windows positions. There are more than enough jobs to go around for those proficient
in Linux and UNIX.

Eliminating Most Crashes and Downtime

The only thing worse than a tough 60-hour week is a tough 60-hour week followed by
a two-day emergency. With slimmer staffs and more users with less training, the technol-
ogist’s life is often an exercise in fire fighting. Fire fighting is the bane of the technical
employee’s existence. The employee is grateful for any relief from emergencies.

Enter Samba reliability. Fewer emergencies, less unscheduled downtime, the ability to
plan and schedule, and,of course, less overtime. Most technologists do not dispute that
UNIX,Linux, and Samba are more reliable than their Windows NT counterparts, and
they’re in a position to truly appreciate that reliability.

More Fun, Less Frustration

Most technologistschose their profession for the fun. The excellent salary is a conse-
quence of the choice, not the main reason. The better the technology, the more the fun.

Good technology produces predictable results based on logic and good design. Quirky
and intermittent systems are not good technology, and they’re not fun. Most technologists
resent the need for workarounds to compensate for inadequate design. The technology can
be difficult. That’s half the fun. But to be fulfilling,it must follow the laws of cause and
effect.

Samba is highly modular, primarily consisting of the nmbd netbiosinterface, the

smbddaemon, the smb.confconfiguration file that tells smbdand nmbdwhat to do,the

smbpasswdprogram, and several client utilities that run completely independent of smbd,

nmbd, smb.conf, and smbpasswd. Samba is a straightforward and consistent technology,
so it’s fun to use.

Note

As previously mentioned, Samba versions currently under development have
additional daemons, but the modularity principle remains the same.
