The smbprintscriptis not used for printing from the command line. SMB printing from
the command line is done with smbclient. The smbprintscript is used as a filter within
a printcap-specified print queue, thus enabling a UNIX print command to transparently
print to a Windows (or other SMB-connected) printer,as follows:

lpsmb:\

:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lpsmb:\
:mx#0:\

Caution

In the preceding command, note that the file specifier is *.* *. If it had been
set to *.*, it would have backed up files in the share’s root but missed subdirec-
tories. If it’s had been set to *, it would have backed up the subdirectories but
missed the files in the share’s root. Note that *.* *cannot be used in Windows
98 shares, because doing so makes two copies of the subdirectories in the .tar
file.

:lp=/dev/null:

The preceding is a rather useless exercise because there’s no print filtering to match the
hardware printer. However, many filters call smbprintif the printer is found to be an
SMB printer.

The main thing to remember about smbprintis that it isn’t a script for sending a file
to the printer from the command line. Instead, use smbclientfor sending a file to the
printer from the command line.
