Each fileand directory on a Windows system has an Access Control List (ACL). An ACL
is a list of users and/or groups having access to its files and directories and defining the
type of access each user and group has to the file or directory. There is no such thing in
UNIX,where access is determined by user ID and group membership. Fortunately,
Samba expands the UNIX control mechanism to allow multiple group access to a direc-
tory but not to an individual file.

ACLs are most evident while converting from an NT file server to a Samba file server.
