      Introduction

      If you assume that handwashing is only for children and healthcare workers, then think again. Handwashing is the most useful way of preventing the spread of diseases and illnesses, according to health professionals. They claim that hand washing can stop the transmission of many infectious diseases like common colds, influenza, meningitis, hepatitis A, salmonella, and pinworms.

      The relevance of handwashing can't be taken for granted because history has taught us how handwashing and sanitation saved thousands of lives. An Austrian-Hungarian physician called Ignaz Semmelweis demanded that student doctors in the hospital he worked had their hands washed before having contacts with maternity patients.

      The student doctors had operated on bodies in an anatomy class and then went on to do their rounds in the maternity unit without washing their hands. This experiment proved to be successful when maternity deaths dropped fivefold. But it took another 50 years before handwashing became the
