KON 13040/11/2011 (0289 SE by Dato Seri Dr T Devaraj
ee eo es 14th ~ 17th July 2011
of Malaysia, Penang Branch Hotel Equatorial, Penang
This series of regional meelings has come to Malaysia for the firs lime. The Asia Pacific Hospice
Palliative Core Network (APHN) was established to empower and support individuals and
‘organizations committed to alleviating suffering from life threatening liness in the Asia Pacific
region.
It arose in 1995 from the vision and generosity of Dr Shigeaki Hinchara who was the Chaitman of
the Life Planning Centre, Tokyo, an eminent physician who had set up "Peace House” not far
‘away from Mount Fuji. It was the first in-patient hospice outside hospitals. Following a series of
meetings of representatives from some counties in the region, including Malaysia, APHN was
formally registered as a charity in Singapore on 1 March 2001. Dr Hinchara who is well into the
nineties is the Patron of APHN.
The regional hospice conferences had been initiated earlier beginning thus ~ Singapore 1989
and 19%, Hong Kong 1999, Taipei 2001, Osaka 2003, Seoul 2006, Manila 2007 and Perth 2009.
The Malaysian Hospice Council (MHC], a member of APHN has been given the task of
organizing this, its 9h conference.
‘The conference theme “Palliative Care in Mainstream Medicine" was chosen to reiterate that
caring is the responsibilty of all health professionals looking after the sick - that basically itis just
good medical care that can be delivered in any setting. it is hoped that those attending this
conference would help advance the integration of palictive care with mainstream medicine in
their respective counties.
‘he firs! day will be devoted 10 participatory workshops for health professionals and volunteers
followed by three days of plenary sessions and symposia. The social events wil be a welcome
reception, the opening, a banquet and at the closing a promotion of the 10th APHC scheduled
to be in Thailand in 2013. Through courtesy of state tourism our mult-tacetted culture would be
displayed and city and heritage tours for the accompanying persons of foreign delegates
arranged.
To all our wonderful donors, supporters, volunteers, staff and well wishers
“Wishing you a Beautiful Holiday Season and a New Year of Peace and Happiness”
From the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Penang Branch & Penang Hospice SocietyProf John Ellershaw Prof Malcolm Fisher Prof Menyn Gott —_Dr Harmala Gupta,
We are happy to announce that the keynote speaker will be Prof John Ellershaw from Liverpool,
well known for his “Liverpool Care Pathway”. Some of the others are Prof Malcolm Fisher,
Sydney, Prof Menyn Gott, Auckland and Dr Harmala Gupta who will deliver the second
Hinchara Lecture.
We look forward to the participation of health professionals in Malaysia and volunteers in the
hospice movement. Apart from learning, sharing and fellowship as carers this conference also
offers the opportunity for us in the couniry to share their experince of hospice by oral or poster
presentations. For those interested the closing date for abstracts is 14 Jan 2011
For the hospice movement in Malaysia, now in ils 18th year, this conference could also be the
stimulus for hospice advocacy through out the country - targeting the public for awareness, the
health professionals in the public and private sectors the importance of good medical practice
and the government, both federal and state, to be more supportive to efforts in the community
to reduce suffering of the sick.

Christmas Tree Ribbon Campaign
2010
Paradise Sandy Beach Resort
once again organized the above campaign on 2 December 2010. This event was aimed
at creating more public cancer awareness, whilst celebrating Christmas. It was also
aimed at collecting much needed funds for Hospice at Home Programme.
There was @ very tall Christmas tree, adored with pink and yellow ribbons in the resort
lobby. About 120 people, including cancer survivors, supporters and hotel guests were
present that evening. The General Manager of the resort, Dato’ Jeff De Ziva, addressed
the crowd highlighting the significance of the project and encouraging all present to
donate generously to this worthy cause.
On the platform lighting the candles were YB Teh Yee Chev, YB Danny Law, Dato’ Jeff
De Ziiva and Madam Mui Siew Keon. Parlicipants then lit their purple candles, while
watching a short video presentation and enjoying a music performance by two young
musicians. The highlight of the evening was the lighting up of the gigantic tree by the
same 4 VIPs. This was followed by a buffet reception. Participants were graciously joined
by TYT Yang diPerlua Negeri Tun Dato’ Utama (Dr) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas.
We, in National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Penang Branch, thank all in Paradise Sandy
Beach Resort for the wonderful time given to participants and for the donations
collected. We appreciate the constant support given by the Resort
