Notes(l) It is presumed ASTM specifications are cheaper and easier to

procure than the corresponding ASME specifications, which are
also acceptable. Where metric sizes are required, specify the
metric version e.g. ASTM A 27 becomes ASTM A 27M.
(2) Must not be welded, even to retain nuts. Supplied quenched &
tempered. Must be re- heat-treated after hot or cold working to
restore properties.
(3) Round or rectangular bar.
(4) When strength rather than deflection or vibration is the
critical criterion. Check availability for small quantities.
(5) Where small (up to 1~") inch series bolting is suitable and does
not interface with standard metric parts. Otherwise use metric
ASTM F 568M grade 8.8 bolts.
(6) In the annealed condition. The same material to ASTM A 240 may
also be specified.
(7) Use ISO metric sizes to avoid redesigning interfacing standard
parts. Table 2.1.2(2) bolt blanks are also suitable.
(8) With a supplementary requirement that the minimum 0.2% proof
stress at room temperature is 640 MPa.
(9) With supplementary requirement S4 if welding is intended. Note
that as this could result in higher carbon than European
practice, an appropriate welding procedure should be used.
