Attitude structure
Attitudes consist of three related
components:
1.An emotional component consisting
of emotional reactions toward, or
feelings about the attitude object.
1.Explicit attitudes:
– The evaluations we consciously express.
1.Implicit attitudes:
– Involuntary responses to the attitude object.

implicit reactions can be the same thing.
• But, there can also be a difference between
what people say and what they think or
believe

• Raises possibilities for studying attitudes
Attitude function
Attitudes will fluctuate in order to serve our current
needs.
Four major functions
1. Utilitarian function
- Helps person to achieve rewards and gain
approval from others
2. Knowledge function
- Attitudes can be used as a “frame of reference”
for organizing the world so that it makes sense
- For example, we perceive knowledge that contradicts our views with
suspicion, thus forming a negative impression of that source of
information (Giner-Sorolla & Chaiken, 1997).
Attitude function
3. Ego-defensive function
- Helps to cope with emotional conflicts and
protect and enhance one’s self-esteem.
- E.g., one’s job not going well, can blame colleagues or his boss, this
negative orientation towards the people he or she blames protects one
from acknowledging painful truths.
4. Value-expressive function
- Help to express central values and core
aspects of self-concept.
- For example, if you are a person who firmly believes in fair treatment
and equality towards others, you’ll most likely have a positive attitude
towards particular political parties and a negative attitude towards others.

CONVERSATION ATTITUDE
Is it true?
Is it nice?
Is it necessary?

•Conversation Attitude
•Be truthful.
1. To be positive is natural.
---------------------------------------
• Be cheerful.
• Happiness is a state of mind. If you
think you are in heaven, you are.
• Use bright & positive language in
everything you do.
• Think positive. It is good for you.
----------------------------------------------------
• Expect the best. You will get it.
“Not doing good is evil.”
• To read is to grow.
• To read is also to lead.
• Learn something every day.
• Listen.
• Discussions make you richer.
• ‘unchangeables’
• Be ready: planned destruction may
be necessary before planned
construction Dare! Innovate!
• Don’t be risk-averse. Only those
who dare reach new heights.
• Dare to be different. Discovery
follows exploration.
• Challenge the givens & the.
• Never mind that you didn’t succeed.
“May you not enjoy the work you
do!”
• “Every solution
contains a problem
within it.” syndrome.
• “Suppose we win?”
• “If anything can go
wrong, it will.”
Weighing problem!
Don’t be rule-bound.
Interpret the rules positively. Let them
enable, and not inhibit, you.
Precedents should be guides, not
fetters.
Good people follow the rules. But, it is
often the unscrupulous who quote the
rules.
Breaking norms in order to frame
better ones is an option to be
explored.
DON’T BE IN SELF-DOUBT.
Be performance-oriented.
“If one desires a change, one must be that
change before it can take place.”
