• Legacy has awarded $389,652 in grants to projects in North Dakota.

Tobacco Usage

• In FY2010 North Dakota spent $9.4 million on tobacco prevention, which is 100.6% of the
CDC Annual Spending Target.1

• The CDC estimates that 45.7% of adult smokers in North Dakota tried to quit smoking in
2008.2

• North Dakota received $58 million in tobacco settlement payments and taxes in FY10.3

• North Dakota has not securitized any of its Master Settlement Agreement dollars.4

State Tobacco Laws9

Excise Tax: There is a tax of $0.44 per pack on cigarettes. The tax on cigar and pipe tobacco is
28% of the wholesale purchase price. There is a tax of $0.16 per ounce on chew tobacco and
$0.60 per ounce on snuff.

Clean Indoor Air Ordinances


• Smoking is prohibited in all child care centers, government buildings, health facilities,
schools and private workplaces.

• Smoking restrictions are required in all restaurants.

Youth Access Laws


• The minimum age requirement for the purchase of tobacco products is 18, and penalties
exist for merchants who violate this law. It is a non-criminal offense for minors to
purchase tobacco products.

• The sale of bidis is prohibited.
