the greatest British daylight raid of the war, a strong force
of giant Lancaster bombers-the most powerful and fastest in
the world-yesterday flew nearly 300 miles into occupied France
to bomb the huge Le Creusot armaments works. The raid was
highly successful, and only one of the bombers was lost.

BOMBER
(COMMENTATORS claim that the
raid will rank as one of. the
RAF's greatest achievements, and
some already are describing it as

sensational.
The Lancasters flew to Le Creusot,
which is 170 miles south-east ot
Paris, without fighter escort. It

was^the longest attacking flight

by
this type of aircraft since the day-
light raid on Augsburg in April.
The raiders arrived over the
target about 6 pm. The pilots had
been instructed to complete the
job as quickly as possible, but not
to attack in formation. Within
20 minutes they had turned for
home-a perfect piece of timing.

Comparable in size with the

Krupps plant in Germany. Le
Creusot works, which cover 287
acres, are the largest and most im-
portant of the international
Schneider Cartel, and have been
making German-pattern guns of
heavy calibre, as well as loco-
motives, tools, and
machine armour

the Germans avoided bombing the
plant, which was well within the
range of the Luftwaffe
Yesterday afternoon Mustangs of
Army Co-operation Command at-
tacked railway installations in Hol-
land, while Spitfires were busy in
Northern France. None of these
raiders is missing.-AAP.
