1. What is ‘Benchmarking’?
Answer:-

Benchmarking is the process of identifying "best practice" in relation to both products

(including) and the processes by which those products are created and delivered. The search
for "best practice" can take place both inside a particular industry, and also in other industries
(for example - are there lessons to be learned from other industries?).[1]

The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a

business or organisation in relation to "best practice" and to identify areas and means of
performance improvement.

2. Who pioneered the art of ‘benchmarking’?

Answer:-

XEROX for the past 25 years

3. .What are the current trends in ‘benchmarking’?

Answer:-

The trends in benchmarking are in the field of:

 Development of Internet-enabled techniques and practices for benchmarking.

Eg:1. The European Network of Living Labs ENoLL - founded in 2006 and reaching
in 2009 the number of 129 members - facilitates the cooperation and the exploitation of
synergies between the members through offering networking possibilities, deriving and
sharing benchmarking experience, sharing best practices, provisioning of services and tools,
and accessing different user communities.

 Information technology benchmarking includes data processing, systems analysis,

programming, end-user support, and networks.[2]
 Infrastructure benchmarking includes data centers, networks, data/information,
end-user support, and distribution remote centers.
 Application benchmarking includes system analysis, development and
maintenance programming, and functionality.
 Strategy benchmarking includes skills assessment, information technology
strategy, business-technology alignment, and delineation of roles and
responsibilities.
