Batik

History

The word batik in Indonesian and means “wax writing” . batik is very often considered a craft like
ceramic ,pottery or even needlework although it is a household word all over the world ,batik is still
overlooked by art critics who do not consider it an art form. There are several countries known for
their batik work starting from India where it originated. After that it moved to Indonesia Malaysia, sir
lanka, Thailand and the west. The history of India n batik can be traced as far back as 2000 years.

Description of the art

The process involved brushing on melted paraffin and beeswax on it penetrate specific portion of
the fabric.

The waxed fabric is then dipped into or painted with wet dyes. The waxed portion repels or resist he
dyes thus the term resist process.

Each time a new colour is introduced on the fabric, portion of that colored waxed and held until the
desired colour scheme is achieved. All wax is removed after the process is completed. Batik can be
recognised by its characteristic through the design and unifies the colours and composition.

The beauty of batik lies in its simplicity and the fact that one need not be an artist to achieves
result .some of the of the best effect in batik are often achieved by chance.

This craft has entered its new era with colourful designs under the tutelage of the fuse artist
Nandala Basu and is now predominant in bolpure Suri, Rampurrhati Iand II and Md Bazar excellent
design of saree , Panjabi top garment shower piece ,wall mats, sitting cover file bags etc are most
attractive in the national and international market. This craft is expanding with computerized design
with an immense pace among the rural women artisan the district.

Kantha

Hum has a history of traditional art and craft practiced by the rural artisan whose expert hand did
give life to inanimate objects such as iron, brass, and bell metal. Lac gold, silver, sholapith, wood
cane and bamboo etc. Period to the advent of Britisher the district had a tradition background of
agro based rural industries and craft e.g. sugar and molasses , silk ,tassar , cotton, and cotton fabric
etc.

Now some of them are in existence, some struggling for existence, and some have gone to almost
oblivion. In some of the craft diversification has brought some glimpses of prospect of which the
most glaring example is Kantha stitch’.

This craft is spread over considerable area in bolpur, labpur, suri-I and II Ilambazar, dubrajpur, R/hat
–I Maayureshwar-I NAD nanoor. In these the high quality kantha stitch work are done that are quite
popular in different part of the country and those are also of high demand in the international
market. Almost 10,000 female artisans are engaged in this craft across the district.

Historical significance

Kantha evolve out of necessity to drape or protect against cold, kantha or Sanskrit means rags. It can
right be called the recycling art. This precious silk and muslin when become worn-out women
instead of throwing them away, piled them in layers and stitched.

Another legends related kantha origin to Lord Buddha and his disciples. It is said that they used to
cover themselves with thrown away rags patched and stitched together .the term nakshi, popular
used in west Bengal is found even in medieval literature. The name nakshi kantha become
particularly popular among literate people after the publication of Jasimuddin’s poem Nakshi Kantha
Math(1929).

Kantha was said to be a lady self expression .The real kantha narrates a story, the emotion and the
life of artist

Raw material

Plain sari and dress material are produce from the adjacent villages of the deistic at a price range of
about Rs.500-750, sometime thaans and tie –dyed sari are also reduced.
Other raw material required are threads with which the stitches are done. These are brought from
local market without hassles.

The product made out of this process is mainly sari. Punjabis ,salwar sit dopatta, stole , shawl ,
jackets ,tops , hanky , different type of bags and some other materials from home furnishing are also
made .
