Sickle Cell

Anemia

Sickle Cell Anemia(S.C.A. {S.C.D.}) is a blood disorder that

causes loss of hemoglobin and red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a

protein that is found in red blood cells, they help transport oxygen

throughout the body. Infected cells die early, causing loss of a lot

of blood cells.

Children have a hard time fighting S.C.D. it infects the spleen so

they would have a hard time fighting off disease. The Blood cells

become sticky and hard. They group together to form a “C” shape

which looks like a farm tool called a sickle. There are many

different types of S.C.A. like;

• H.B.S.S.

• H.B.S.C.

• H.B.S. (Beta thalassemia)


• H.B.S.E.

• H.B.S.D.

• H.B.S.O.

• H.L.B.A.S.

PREVENTION

1. SLEEP!! (this is the most important)

2. eat a balnced diet

3. take medication as piscribed

4. drink lots of fluids

5. stay away from extream cold/heat

6. exercise regularly in moderation

7. avoid alcohol, drugs, and smoking

8. avoid places of low oxygen

9. contact a doctor as soon as you begain to feel slight

sympotoms

10. be informed about the disease

MEDICINE
Kids with S.C.A. should take penacillion. But you should ask

your doctor before taking any medicine.

RE

There is no cure for S.C.A. that they know of yet.

SPRED/CAUSE

People with S.C.A. can still live long and health lives.

S.C.A. is not contagis It is genetic Two non-infected parents

wont give there child S.C.A. one non-infectedd parent and


one infected parent will give their child symptoms of the

disease but not the disease itself. Two infected parnts WILL

give their child.

Did you know 1 in every 375 people in Africa have

sickle cell this is also true in medditeranian countries, Turkey,

The Arabian Penisula, India, And many Spanish speaking

places. The avg. person with sickle cell anemia lives to there

mid 40s
