Engagement Capacity Structures Checklist
Engagement efforts must be supported by formal leadership represented
by positional power at the highest levels.
Structures that support engagement have the following characteristics:
Flexible and agile
Cross‐cutting, e.g., deans’ councils, cross‐department initiatives, cross‐
discipline initiatives, distributed responsibilities for engagement across
colleges, beyond extension and/or throughout colleges
Structures should include grant‐writing support for engaged scholarship
Funding structures for excellence in engaged scholarship must be in place
Provide matching services (help faculty connect with community partners,
help community partners match with faculty expertise or internal assets).
Provide capacity building and faculty development activities that assist in
institutionalizing engagement.
Develop units, staff/faculty who are responsible for campus‐community
engagement and engaged scholarship.
Articulate the process map of relevant processes and competencies related
to campus‐community partnerships, e.g., defining partnerships, goals,
vision, commitments, MOUs, etc.:
• Skills and experiences in forming partnerships

• Ability to navigate local networks
• Understanding how to build coalitions and accrue resources for
partnerships
• Develop advisory boards, consortia or other structures to give voice
to students, community partners. Use advisory boards in prioritizing
goals and intended outcomes and in allocating resources.
