TYPES OF RETAIL FORMATS

1. CHAIN STORES:
• Chain stores are retail outlets that share a brand and central
management, and usually have standardized business methods and
practices.
• These characteristics also apply to chain restaurants and some
service-oriented chain businesses.
• In retail, dining and many service categories, chain businesses
have come to dominate the market in many parts of the world. Chain
stores are a form of franchising.
• The world's largest retail chain, Wal-Mart, became the world's
largest corporation based on gross sales.

2. DEPARTMENT STORE:
• These are the general merchandise retailers offering various kinds of
quality products and services. These do not offer full service category
products and some carry a selective product line.
• K Raheja's Shoppers Stop is a good example of department stores. Other
examples are Lifestyle and Westside. These stores have further categories,
such as home and décor, clothing, groceries, toys, etc.
• They are very large stores offering a huge assortment of "soft" and "hard
goods; often bear a resemblance to a collection of specialty stores.
• A retailer of such store carries variety of categories and has broad
assortment at average price. They offer considerable customer service.

3. CATEGORY KILLERS:
• Small specialty stores have expanded to offer a range of categories. They
have widened their vision in terms of the number of categories.
• They are called category killers as they specialize in their fields, such as
electronics (Best Buy) and sporting goods (Sport Authority).
• By supplying wide assortment in a single category for lower prices a
retailer can "kill" that category for other retailers. For few categories, such
as electronics, the products are displayed at the centre of the store and
sales person will be available to address customer queries and give
suggestions when required. Other retail format stores are forced to reduce
the prices if a category specialist retail store is present in the vicinity.

4. HYPERMARKET:
• A hypermarket is a superstore which combines a supermarket and a
department store. The result is a very large retail facility which carries an
enormous range of products under one roof, including full lines of
groceries and general merchandise.
• hypermarkets allow customers to satisfy all their routine weekly shopping
needs in one trip. It provides variety and huge volumes of exclusive
merchandise at low margins. The operating cost is comparatively less than
other retail formats.
• A classic example is the Metro™ in Bangalore.

5. EXCLUSIVE STORES: Franchise system of branded companies. A franchise


can be exclusive, non-exclusive or 'sole and exclusive'. The examples of exclusive
stores are ADIDAS, REEBOK, BIBA,etc.

6. CONSUMER CO-OPERATIVES:
• A consumer cooperative is a cooperative business owned by its customers
for their mutual benefit.
• It is a form of free enterprise that is oriented toward service rather than
pecuniary profit.
• Consumers' cooperatives often take the form of retail outlets owned and
operated by their consumers. The customers or consumers of the goods
and/or services the cooperative provides are often also the individuals who
have provided the capital required to launch or purchase that enterprise.
• consumers' cooperatives are known as cooperative retail societies or retail
co-ops, though they should not be confused with retailers' cooperatives,
whose members are retailers rather than consumers.
• There are many types of consumers' cooperative. There are health care,
insurance, and housing cooperatives as well as credit unions, agricultural
and utility cooperatives.

7. SUPERMARKET:
• A supermarket, also called a grocery store is a self-service store offering a
wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into
departments.
• It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery
store and it is smaller than a hypermarket or superstore.

8. CASH&CARRY:
• Cash and carry is defined as wholesale depot operations from which retail
customers purchase goods and provide their own transport.
• Credit terms are normally available, while a limited delivery service may
be offered to larger customers.
• Cash and carry operators buy goods in large quantities from the
manufacturer or buying group and then sell these goods to their retail
customers at prices only slightly above what they paid for them.
• They accept low net profit margins, in return for high-volume sales, and
thus are able to keep costs to a minimum.

1. Margin Free:

• It is a chain of speciality supermarkets in South India.


• The Margin Free Market is a co-operative venture of the Consumer Protection &
Guidance Society and the management, which came forward to take up the
responsibility of launching it.
• The First Margin Free Market, Fort, Trivandrum was inaugurated on 26 January
1994 by the Hon. District Collector Nivethitha P Haran.
• Provisions, Toiletries, Gift Articles, Kitchenware, plastic goods, fans, mixers,
pressure cookers etc. are being sold at reduced rates varying from 1 to 40% less
than the maximum retail price fixed by the companies. The society could create
an awareness among the people which has resulted in opening a few Margin Free
Shops at various parts of Kerala on their own accord.

3. Shopper Stop:

• It is an Indian department store chain promoted by the K Raheja Corp Group


(Chandru L Raheja Group), started in the year 1991 with its first store in
Andheri, Mumbai
• Shoppers Stop Ltd has been awarded "the Hall of Fame" and won "the Emerging
Market Retailer of the Year Award", by World Retail Congress at Barcelona, on
April 10, 2008.
• Shoppers Stop is one of the leading retail stores in India. Shoppers Stop began by
operating a chain of department stores under the name “Shoppers’ Stop” in India.
Shoppers Stop has 35 stores across the country and three stores under the name
HomeStop.
• Shoppers Stop retails a range of branded apparel and private label under the
following categories of apparel, footwear, fashion jewellery, leather products,
accessories and home products. These are complemented by cafe, food,

4. Nalli’s:

• Nalli, synonymous with Silk, was established in the year 1928 and has been a
leader in the textile and retail business for over 80 years. An icon of South India,
Nalli has become synonymous with silk or kanchipuram sarees.
• Started as a small retail store for silk Sarees in Chennai by a young man called
Nalli Chinnasami Chetty in 1928, the family-run shop did steady business for
thirty years after which the grandson, Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti took over.
• Nalli's business focus has broadened, becoming not only a leading sari-retailer,
but also one of the foremost manufactures and exporters of fabrics, apparel and
home furnishings.

5. Adidas:

• Adidas AG FWB: ADS, ADR:Pink Sheets: ADDYY) is a German sports


apparel manufacturer and parent company of the Adidas Group, which
consists of the Reebok sportswear company, golf company (including
Ashworth), and Rockport.
• Besides sports footwear, the company also produces other products such as
bags, shirts, watches, eyewear and other sports and clothing-related goods.
• The company is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and the second
biggest sportswear manufacturer in the world, after its American rival Nike.
• Adidas was founded in 1948 by Adolf "Adi" Dassler, following the split of
Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik between him and his older brother, Rudolf.
Rudolf later established Puma, which was the early rival of Adidas.

7. Metro:
• Metro AG (FWB: MEO) is a diversified retail and wholesale/cash and carry
group based in Düsseldorf, Germany.
• It has the largest market share in its home market, and is one of the most
globalised retail and wholesale corporations.
• It is the 3rd largest retailer in the world according to Deloitte [2] and Reuters[3]. In
English it often refers to itself as Metro Group.
• It was established in 1964 by Otto Beisheim.
8. Subhiksha:
• Subhiksha was an Indian retail chain with 1600 outlets selling groceries,
fruits, vegetables, medicines and mobile phones.
• It began operations in 1997, and was closed down in 2009 owing to financial
mismanagement and a severe cash crunch.
• The name Subhiksha means prosperity in Sanskrit. It opened its first store in
Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai in March, 1997 with an investment of about Rs. 5
crore. It was started and managed by R Subramaniam, an IIM Ahmedabad
alumnus.
• Subhiksha planned to open 1000 outlets by December 2008.[1] Subramanian
also planned to invest Rs.500 crore to increase the number of outlets to 2000
across the country by 2009.

9. Shagun:
• The latest mall in town will be the one-stop shop for brides and grooms to be.
• Though skewed heavily in the bride's favour (only 1,000 sq ft in the 20,000 sq
ft mall has been earmarked for the groom), it's the first such venture in India

12. Kendriya Bhandar:
• Kendriya Bhandar ( A Multi State Central Government Employees Consumer Co-
operative Society Ltd.) was set up in 1963 by Government of India and is
functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievance and
Pensions as a welfare project for the benefit of Central Government Employees
and public at large.
• The objective of Kendriya Bhandar is to meet the day to day requirements of all
Central Government Departments, State Government Departments, Public Sector
Undertakings etc.
13. Ebony:
• It launched its store in 1994 at South Extension, New Delhi. Its main goal
is to give world-class shopping experience to the Indian consumer. It has
successfully opened seven stores across seven cities in India.
• Ebony Retail Holdings Ltd has initiated several industry trends, making a
distinguished place for itself in the industry.
• The most prominent and successful Ebony in-house brand are ETC and a
