1. Title of report (giving as much of detail as possible)
2. Name (who the report is by)
3. Name of person/organization (who the report is for)
4. The release date

INTRODUCTION:
1. Purpose statement:
a. Identifies the problem clearly
b. Addresses the technical investigations (summary)
c. Outlines the rhetorical purpose—purpose of the study

FORMAT of the Proposal

QUESTIONS proposals should answer:


1. Problem you’re going to solve
2. How you plan to solve it
3. Exactly what information you’re going to provide
4. What benefits you can offer as the researcher
5. When can you complete the work

SUBJECT: Always something rhetorical (ex: proposal to solve the problem of the “high
failure rate in the math department”). It is posed not as solution, but as a problem!

HEADINGS IN UPPER AND LOWER CASES

• Short paragraph without a heading: Summary of the problem


• BACKGROUND: (HEADING LEFT MARGIN) Statistics
• PROBLEM: (HEADING LEFT MARGIN) More detail, specifics of the problem
• FEASIBILITY: (HEADING LEFT MARGIN) How feasible it is to study such a
problem. Try to convince your instructor of back up plan in case you can’t get
information (short paragraph 3-4 sentences).
• TOPICS TO INVESTIGATE: (HEADING LEFT MARGIN) What groups are
affected? Ex: Undergrad students, or international students, professors of math
departments. How does it work?
• AUDIENCE (S): (HEADING). Which audience has an interest in this, something
at stake, something to lose or gain?
• METHODS: (HEADING). How you plan to conduct study
o Sample method
o How you will select your respondents
o Give details
• QUALIFICATIONS AND RESOURCES: (HEADING). (ex: I am a student in a
department and I have access, or I work at this company) Show you have
qualifications and you have resources to conduct the study.
• WORK SCHEDULE: (HEADING). Nov 6-11 Determine sample; Nov 12-15
Conduct survey…. All the way to the due date.
• CALL TO ACTION: (HEADING). Simple statement asking for suggestions or
feedback to improve this topic and support to go ahead with the research.

THEN ATTACH SURVEY INSTRUMENTS:

• QUESTIONNAIRE: Closed questions (9) and open-ended questions (3).
