The position that women held in American society fluctuated dramatically


between 1917 and 1945. This was due to a number of reasons for example
education social and political issues. However I believe that it is fair to say
that by 1945 it was generally fair to say that women had made progress and
America was starting to change. I believe that war was a major contributor
into the strengthened position of women.

During the first world war the women of America really had to make a stand
and pull together as they were for the first time carrying out the duties, roles
and responsibilities that then husbands, fathers and sons would usually be
doing. This was of course appreciated by the American citizens however it
was seen to be unpatriotic to want to keep there job after
