Logo Guide
SI 520, March 2011
Concept:
I feel this is a very sober, balanced, and professional logo. It is a bit simpler than those of most of the
organization’s competitors, and while the logos the organization states liking were also a bit more
complex and colorful, I think the simplicity would really make Ann Arbor International House’s logo
stand out among its peers. While simple, the logo has a bit of expressiveness given by the dot in the
tear shape pointing above the text. The simple black design means the logo should be extremely
scalable, fit for black and white printing, and the tear drop design especially with the dot in one
is somewhat reminiscant of a ying yang symbol. That symbol was my reference when thinking about
my design, as it is well known and carries the meanings of hamony and balance. I think this logo
is just reminiscant enough of a ying yang symbol to carry those connotations, while still being original.
I chose Imprint MT Shadow as the typeface to use with the logo because, while also being very sober
and professional, it adds some needed personality. The glyphs tend to contain a hint of white with the
black, so they fit with the black-and-white design of the logo itself.
I think the biggest challenge with the particular logotype is making sure the curved edges of the tear
drops remain smooth-looking even at a large size.
