ALHAD POSAM (504)

XIMR MMS 1

1. What made the MD change his mind and go against Maniyam? What
role might the VP-HR have played in the episode?

Ans: Maniyam’s Idea was only partially accepted as they hired only 300 girls. Following
reasons can be recognized.

• Company’s vision and Maniyam’s vision doesn’t go consistent.

• The MD has totally different ideas about the type of recruit; ie. Maniyam selected fresher
young girls. Where such kind of textile job is much more suited for boys.
• Maniyam emphasized unskilled young girls, not considering the fact that HIGH
QUALITY textile mill requires substantial expertise. MD must not be in favour of this.
• Hiring of Anil at the training centre maybe considered as a mistake as being from UK he
had never been exposed before to Rural Indian Units, he might not perform efficiently.
• Its possible than freshly 12th passed candidates may be illegal to be employed.(labour
law- 18 years). Company is not willing to take such risk.
• Considering pricipal’s opinion in running a textile mill doesn’t sound convincing.
• Cost of training activities is quite high.
• Maybe company is more Profit oriented and idea of social welfare on the expense of
profitability may not be accepted by MD.

Apparantly It doesn’t appear that VP-HR has played role. But following can be the
possibilities,

• VP-HR might have some better ideas to implement, and he might be able to convince
those to MD.
• VP- HR may have been successful in convincing MD that he can better handle the
operations.

2. If You Were Maniyam What you will do?

Ans: I would take following steps;

• First thing I would do is to understand the Organization culture and the expectation
of MD in recruiting the candidates.
• Understand the business operations and find its employee skill-set requirement.
• Design the optimal HR policy and Construct HR planning as expected by company.
• Give MD a brief about the recruitment plan before actually start the implementation.
• If I have idea which is much different than what is expected, I would try to convince
management by providing rationale.
• If my idea is based on social welfare(as in this case), I would rather convince this to
MD as a CSR activity, where profitability will come with added benefit of
sustainability.
• I would be more careful appointing my key-subordinate. I would rather choose some
experienced local guy to help me in setting up the operations.
• If doing all this, still my vision doesn’t match with company or my working style is
inconsistent with company’s expectation, I will quit.
