Problem 1
f ( x) − f ( a )
A function f ( x) is a differentiable at a point x = a if and only if lim exists.
x →a x−a
Geometrically, we say that a function is differentiable at a point if a non-vertical
tangent line to the graph can be drawn at that point.

Examples

1. Polynomials are differentiable (smooth) everywhere.

2. f ( x) =| x | and g ( x) = 3 x both fail to be differentiable at x = 0.

Problem 2

Differentiability Æ Continuity

A continuous function need not be differentiable. Examples: cusps, corners,

vertical tangent lines.
