Using the information given by the two following websites or by asking questions to people in charge,
write a short essay (maximum 4 pages), discussing to what extent the University has ‘implemented’ its
announced international strategy.

Appalachian State University has implemented a strong international strategy as is quite evident

on their website. The institution has a well articulated vision, mission, core values and outlines a

well detailed plan in campus internationalization.

The institution has international activities in all of the key areas:

•Appalachian Overseas Education Programs (Faculty-led, short-term Programs)

•International Outreach (campus and surrounding communities, especially K-12)

•International Research and Development

•International Student Exchange and Study Abroad

•International Students and Scholar Services

As outlined in their international policy, the goal is to gather support for the projects from all

levels within the institution. Based on the information evident in their website, it seems that the

program has full institutional support. The procedures are clearly outlined, and so are the detailed

steps necessary to follow to ensure program success.

The goal quite evident on the website is to make it inclusive, and within reach to all students

wanting a study abroad experience. The website lists a number of scholarship and funding

opportunities for students to take advantage of.

The institution has completed a detailed risk assessment plan to ensure the safety of students and

staff as they embark on these international excursions. The institution outlines in detail the

procedures and policies in a document to deal with International Crisis Management assisting in

student extraction and support systems.

The enactment of an International Education Council has helped in creating buy in within the

institution to ensure the internationalization initiative gains support from within all departments.

Overall, ASU has created a strong international initiative leading to internationalization of the

institution. This will serve as a model for any institution looking to internationalize their campus,

curriculum and student support systems.
