1 | St.

James’s
A stronghold of tradition for centuries, St. James’s remains a bastion
of old-fashioned manners and dignified style to this day. This is where
men continue to wear suits—even on Saturdays.

Exit the tube at Charing Cross. Head west along the Strand to
famed Trafalgar Sq. Begin your outing with a visit to the mas-
sive National Gallery (1) and the National Portrait Gallery
(2); their treasures are too great to list here, but it’s definitely
worth setting aside some time for these world-class cultural
institutions. Afterward, cross south through the Square and
head west, passing under the Admiralty Arch to reach the Mall,
along which you’ll find the Institute of Contemporary Arts
(3), a multimedia facility known for its eclectic contemporary
exhibits. Head up the steps just beyond it, and turn left on Pall
Mall. Turn right into St. James’s Sq., exiting onto Duke of York
at the end. Turn left onto Jermyn, which is lined with quintes-
sentially British men’s apparel and accessory shops, some of
which have been here for centuries. Duck into Prince’s Arc.
and then Piccadilly Arc., beautiful passages lined with more
shops carrying silk waistcoats, velvet slippers, and the like.
Don’t miss Davidoff (4; 35 St. James’s St.), with its stock of
essential accessories: cigars, canes, pipes, and umbrellas. Turn
right on St. James’s St. Detour right on Piccadilly to stock up at
renowned food purveyor Fortnum & Mason (5; 181 Picca-
dilly), then backtrack to rest your weary feet in stylish splen-
dor at the Wolseley (6; #160), a former car showroom that was
transformed a few years ago into one of the city’s most elegant
and popular cafés. Splurge on oysters on the half-shell, or just
tea and dessert. Continue past the Ritz to Green Park Station.

2 | Green Park and
St. James’s Park
This lovely walk through two of central London’s prettiest royal parks
offers a pleasant change of pace from the busy city streets and also
passes by legendary Buckingham Palace.

Exit the tube at Green Park. Enter the park through the gate
opposite Bolton St. and head west. Turn left to head down
the majestic, tree-lined Broad Wk. Enjoy a leisurely stroll
down to Queen’s Sq. To the right is Buckingham Palace (1);
if the Royal Standard flag is raised, it means the Queen is in
residence. Pay tribute here, admire the suitably imposing
marble statue of Queen Victoria in the center of the square,
witness the famed Changing of the Guard if you’ve timed it
right (11:30 am) and are there on the right day (visit www.
changing-the-guard.com for current schedules), then exit out
the east side of the square onto the Mall, which leads directly
into St. James’s Park. Descend immediately to the right to get
off the traffic-filled main road, then head along the north side
of the lake. Today St. James’s is a beloved reprieve from the
congested city streets and draws locals and visitors of every
age, who come to seek refuge among the weeping willows and
roses, feed the ducks, and linger on the benches. Stop at Inn
the Park (2) for an open-air snack. Continue to the end of
the park, turning right on Horse Guards Rd. You’ll see Horse
Guards Parade ahead, where military ceremonies take place.
It’s well worth visiting the Churchill Museum & Cabinet
War Rooms (3), which provide an illuminating look at Win-
ston Churchill’s life during the war years through visits to the
Map Room (untouched since the end of the war) and even the
bedroom he used during the war. Continue south, turning left
on Great George St. to reach Westminster Station.
