ANOTHER FULL HOUSE!

May 9, 2006
Ansley Tuesday Afternoon Golf Tour (ATAG)
By: Don Nichols

On an overcast day that threatened rain, it was another full house as 20 thirsty players grabbed all
spots on the five ATAG tee times to take on what later turned out to be a most challenging back
nine.

8 UNDER WINS IT! VICTORS NOT THERE TO CLAIM PRIZE!

The first foursome of Andy Tyber, Mike Gutt, Brooks Cowles, and Bill Benning won
the match with a score of 8 under, yet as these players read this, except for Benning,
they are learning of their victory for the first time. Thinking 8 under to be a safe, middle
of the range “skating” score, and not wanting to wait for all teams to finish, Cowles,
Tyber, and Gutt departed while the patient Benning stayed to socialize and wait for the
conclusion of the match. His loyalty was rewarded as he became eligible for four
brewskies, compliments of the team finishing last--both literally and figuratively-- of
Tom Kisgen, Tim Martin, Danny Morris, and Mike Gaddis who limped in at 4 under,
bringing a sigh of relief from the two teams tied at 5 under. The relative low scores of all
of the groups was an indication that the back nine presented a most formidable challenge
to most of the players on this cloudy day.

TYBER WINS LOW GROSS ! SELLNER REPEATS!

Andy Tyber, like Bill Meagher and Brad Reese in the last two weeks, redeemed himself as a
single digit handicapper by firing a sizzling 36 to make him the sole leader in the clubhouse for
this prestigious honor. (Oddly, it was the first time this year the 5 handicapper had broken 40 in
an ATAG match). Grabbing the high spot for the second week in a row was the resilient Craig
Sellner who improved three strokes over last week’s score to post a round of 52.

LEWIS WINS LOW NET!

Tom Lewis, a 15 handicapper making his second appearance of the season, won Low Net by
posting a round of 42 for a net score of 1 under. Lewis likewise departed early and no doubt is
learning for the first time of this recognition.

TYBER’S PUTTING EARNS SHOT OF THE DAY!

Andy Tyber’s even par round was due in large part to his excellent putting, especially his 40 foot
putt on # 13 for one of two birdies that earned him Shot Of The Day honors. Honorable
mention went to Ollie Kennon who also used the flat stick to his advantage in making two
birdies of his own.

5 BIRDIES RECORDED!

Five birdies added to the total of the Birdie Club as current Birdie Club members Andy
Tyber, Ollie Kennon, and Ron Majors added to their respective cumulative total.

OTHER TIDBITS
On an unseasonably cool evening on the porch, the Commissioner was there in street clothes to
greet the first group and remained to offer congratulations, condolences, and scorn where
warranted to the other players as they finished.

In that regard, for the second week in a row, the fine pool increased after double fines were issued
for slow play—this time to Group 2 members Ollie Kennon and guest, Lee Pearson, and Geoff
Fitzgerald who fell behind three holes and finished their round in 2 hours and 15 minutes. They
had no comment other than claiming that the first group must have just played fast.

Bill Benning was gratuitous with his windfall, donating one of his spoils of victory to the
Commissioner and declining the others, not knowing that Mike Gaddis emerged from the Grill
with a Bass Ale to present to Benning only moments after Benning had departed.

Jim Bernhardt calmly recalled how he had missed a two foot putt for birdie, suggesting that the
anger management therapy was working (although his teeth were notably clenched and his smile
appeared to be forced as he recalled the miscue).
Tim Martin has stuck with his pledge to quit smoking, but accepted the special dispensation
offer from the Commissioner to resume drinking with fellow ATAGers on Tuesday nights.

It appears that the “metro sexual” persona is beginning to permeate the ATAG ranks. At the
conclusion of their round, teammates Lee Pearson and Ollie Kennon opted to hug each other in
lieu of a handshake and later in the evening Mike Gaddis and Lee Pearson were overheard
exchanging recipes and stressing the importance of temperature control while Jim Bernhardt
was extolling the virtues of properly prepared fish tacos. (I just report the facts, guys)

And, finally, the Commissioner has received a “warning letter” from a Joe Bundah of the
USGA accusing ATAG members of sandbagging for not posting their nine hole scores in
accordance with USGA and Ansley Golf Club rules, and warning that members are subject to
“severe punishment” if they henceforth do not comply. The Commissioner has instructed in
house ATAG legal counsel to investigate the authenticity of the letter and to report its findings
and recommendations to the ATAG Supreme Council prior to the Commissioner’s response to
the allegations. We will keep you posted as to future developments regarding this controversial
issue.
