VOLUMETRIC COLOR MEDICAL

IMAGE COMPRESSION

guidance of

OBJECTIVES
LOSSLESS THREE-DIMENSION COLOR
MEDICAL IMAGE COMPRESSION
LOSSLESS COMPRESSION ALLOWS
THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE
ORIGINAL IMAGE DATA FROM THE
COMPRESSED IMAGE DATA
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 2D AND
3D
• 2D and 3D refer to the actual
dimensions in a computer
workspace. 2D is 'flat', using the X &
Y (horizontal and vertical) axis', the
image has only two dimensions and if
turned to the side becomes a line. 3D
adds the 'Z' dimension. This third
dimension allows for rotation and
depth
VOXEL
• A voxel (a portmanteau of the words
volumetric and pixel) is a volume
element, representing a value on a
regular grid in three dimensional
space
• Voxel is the smallest cubical
structure, it has three axes for width,
height and depth
• Voxel has two part
 location
 pixel intensity
DICOM
• Digital Imaging and Communications
in Medicine (DICOM) is a standard
for handling, storing, printing, and
transmitting information in medical
imaging. It includes a file format
definition and a network
communications protocol
• DICOM differs from other data
formats in that it groups information
into data sets
• SINGLE FRAME DICOM SKULL

DICOM
A DICOM data object
consists of a number
of attributes,
including items such
as name, ID, etc., and
also one special
attribute containing
the image pixel data
(i.e. logically, the
main object has no
"header" as such -
merely a list of
attributes, including
the pixel data).

JPEG 2000
• JPEG 2000 is the successor of the
JPEG standard.
• JPEG 2000 delivers about 20-40%
better compression than JPEG. And,
at more extreme compression ratios,
JPEG 2000 delivers significantly
better quality.
JP3D - 3-Dimensional data
compression
• JP3D is still at the Working Draft
stage. It is concerned with the coding
of three-dimensional data, the
extension of JPEG 2000 from planar
to volumetric images.
