 Takes long time to complete.


 Involves a large investment funds and
resources.
 Produces one item at a time to customer
order.

Construction of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was a huge


project that took almost 10 years to complete.
Batch Method
 Processes many different jobs at the same time in groups or
batches.

 Work is divided into parts or operations.

 Each operation is completed through the whole batch before the


next operation is performed.

 Products are typically made to customer order, volume is low and


the demands fluctuates.
 Example: machine shop, furniture making etc…

Continuous/ Mass Method
 Producing large volumes of a standard product for a mass market.
 Requirement of this Method:
1. There must be substantially constant demand
2. The product and/or production tasks must be standardized
3. Materials used in production must be to specification and delivered on
time
4. The output from each stage of the flow must conform to quality standards
Example: Automobiles, television, personal computer & airplanes.
Assembly Line
 The assembly line developed
by Ford Motor Company.

 Assembly lines are designed for a


sequential organization of
workers, tools or machines, and
parts.

 The motion of workers is


minimized to the extent possible.

 All parts or assemblies are handled


either by conveyors or motorized
vehicles such as fork lifts.
Job Production

 Job production, sometimes called jobbing.

 Involves producing a product for a specific customer.

 Job production is most often associated with small firms but


large firms use job production too.

 Examples:
 Designing and implementing an advertising campaign
 Auditing the accounts of a large public limited company.
 Building a new factory
 Installing machinery in a factory
